Gobi Desert Scout Mission - NWD 9

DAY 1-
"He says there was a murder here last night," says our translator with a half English half Mandarin accent. "We should get out of here."

Darren Berrecloth, Cameron McCaul, Blake Jorgenson(photographer), Todd Barber(Logistics) and myself(film maker) all look at each other for a quick second, taking a brief moment to let it sink in that we are not in North America anymore. This is a long way from home and we can't let ourselves forget that.

This still moment of awareness lasts only a second and then we quickly start moving towards the vehicles and get the hell out of there. The man who ran out of his mud hut to tell us that we were about to shred a murder scene disappears over the hill. As we drive off Berrecloth looks over his shoulder out the back window at the Alaskan looking dirt face riddled with cliffs and chutes. Right then I could tell that this would be the first of many trips to the Gobi Desert in China and I wondered to myself why it took the sport of freeriding so long to get over here.

"It took so long to get over here" explains Red Bull Rampage visionary Todd Barber between chop sticks full of chicken "simply because it's expensive to travel to the other side of the world and it's a long way to go based on google earth and a few photo's on the internet." Our group of four are the only westerners in the small local restaurant. I fumble with the chop sticks between my fingers trying to get a hold of the battered chicken in the center of the table before the rest of our team devours it. I understood what Barber was saying as I have watched many Freeride Entertainment shoots that are supposed to be the next big thing in freeriding come back as lifestyle segments. "And also" Barber says chewing another huge piece of chicken" the timing is really difficult, the Gobi has extreme winds and with that come dramatic changes in temperature, ranging from –40°C in winter to +50°C in summer. These couple weeks in October were the only weeks where there wasn't blistering heat, extreme winds or sand storms." I myself first heard about this trip a month ago but apparently it had been in the making since the fall of 2005. I watch Barber place another piece of chicken in the chili sauce as I still grope at the few remaining pieces of chicken with my chop sticks. Barber chews and then tells me about how a friend of his had seen the Rampage and was later traveling in China and told Todd he had to check this place out. It took 2 years to work out the logistics, funds and crew, but here we were, Oct 2007 eating Chinese food after the first day ever of freeriding in the Gobi Desert. China really is a different place. I fumble with my chop sticks and finally get the last piece of chicken in my mouth. I taste it. Hmmm? I think to myself, this chicken really is gamey.

FINAL DAY-

Two weeks have now passed since we've been here. In China, tourists are not allowed to rent cars so we are not only forced to come to terms with our drivers chaotic driving style but also his taste for chinese pop music. McCaul and myself have iPods but I'm beginning to fear Berrecloth now knows all the words to Xin Yue Tuan's "One Night in Beijing". We're starting our four day journey back home. Every one is tired from two weeks of hiking lines, building features and shredding gnar. The mountains blur by out the car window and slowly morph back from unbelievable riding playground to unrideable rock. I wonder if this place will ever turn into a riding proving ground like Utah has become or is it just to far away. I wonder if there is still room for this big mountain riding in the new world of slope style and dirt jumps. I look over at McCaul starring out the window deep in thought as well. I try to guess if he is wondering the same things I am. He takes his ear phones off and looks at Berrecloth and me. "Did you guys see a single dog the whole time we were here?"

This explains why McCaul didn't return to the drop in tour. Big mountain is the future there is only so much dirt jumping we can watch...seeing as it copies bmx. I would be so happy if the next nwd 9 keep the style of this promo video. Good filming, editing and storytelling full of culture.

damn i no evreyone loves these clips.but nwd would be so much better if they didnt show us this, and left it for october, just throw us a teaser at the end of summer for nwd9. now we no what to excpect with all these vids like this. like nwd5 and stuff was so amazing cuz it was so new,now we all have more expectations cuz were gettign such a glipms of what to see,its cool and its yer movies and if evryone likes that then put it up sure, but it hink maybe nwd would be cooler if it was all kept secret till it came out.

You know, Freeride Ent. doesn't give you a glimpse of anything. This was one location.. The teaser was about 3 minutes long.. that is 1/20 of the movie.. And seeing as they were out in the desert for 2 weeks, there is no doubt in my mind that they have a sh*t load of other footage. i think this movie is going to be big. This one clip looks so promising, and im sure it will not disappoint. The NWD series used to be all about huge hucks and speed.. but they, like many other film makers, are starting understand that there is a greater aspect to riding than big lines. Its not only about riding anymore. Its about the art that goes into making a film, as much as it is the riding.

yea i was just saying maybe that was the nwd 8 problem for some people, there was alot of hating...... but ya its defantly no biggie to show this i guess. i was just saying. nwd9 by no means is ruined cuz of this little clip. one thing id like to point out tho is i dont think either mcCaul or claw will show us anything we havent seen in utah.. were not progresing like bmx, but wait a minute maybe nwd 9 will shock me. im not sayign its gona suck im actualy saying it will be amazing, but anything new??i guess biking is about us goign out and having fun rather then sit here watching vids,RITE!! its just winter and i have nothign better to do....

alright now that is a freeride movie. put more of that in and i think they may have the new best NWD movie! Huge improvement from the last one. why has NWD never gone big mountain riding in Vietnam or Fiji. both probably have amazing terrain.

derka derka has a way with words im gunna have to agree with his little speech except for the first couple of scentences which was pointless rambling about shit that we allready now but thats chill and i thought nwd8 was gorgeous nwd 9 shud b even better but they should get a better theme than wrestling this year maybe wild unicorn racing "hint hint"

China has the worst music I have ever heard. No questions asked. There's a little bit of freeriding in the cities actually. A few kids are into trials bmx, go figure

 when is nwd9 comin out??
  • 0 0
NWD 8 just came out in November, so the estimate would be on average NWD videos come out once a year. On that little bit of Math, I'm gonna say next November.

My guess would be the Wed night of the 2008 Vegas bike show.
