Pinkbike Awards: Slopestyle/Freeride Event of the Year

Jan 29, 2015
by Scott Secco

Some athletes thrive under pressure, how else to explain Cam Zink's boundary breaking runs at Red Bull Rampage, or Brandon Semenuk's flawless perfectionism on the Red Bull Joyride course; others perform best when they're having fun riding with friends. This award pits the monumental NBC spectacles of Joyride and Rampage, vs. the grassroots FEST Series vibes of Aggy's Reunion. Our nominees include: The Red Bull Joyride, The Red Bull Rampage, and Aggy's Reunion. Each event was a major contributor to our sport's progression, but only one champion can be crowned.

Slopestyle/Freeride Event Of The Year

Aggy's Reunion

Kamloops, British Columbia is hallowed ground for freeriders everywhere - Kamloopsian's Brett Tippie and Wade Simmons basically invented the concept - and its influence is felt by those who have enjoyed movie segments from the likes of Matt Hunter, Steve Romaniuk, Graham Agassiz, and Matt Miles over the years. To this day, the jumps and trails hidden in the grasslands will test the skills of anyone bold enough to tee them up, that's why it makes sense that freeride went back to its roots. The very first FEST stop, Aggy's Reunion, took place in May at the Kamloops Bike Ranch. The course, built by Aggy, Brad Stuart, and friends, was massive, the closest thing to freestyle motocross that we'd seen in mountain biking. Riders, and fans alike, raved about it.

FEST was more than just a massive set of dirt jumps and a Hall of Fame rider list. The FEST Series is an ideal, it's the first time we've seen riders actively band together to organize something beyond the confines of major corporate events. While there were sponsors for individual events in series - someone had to pay for the machines used to build these beasts - there were no set start times, and no judges, branding was minimal: it was just like riding with your friends (if your friends happen to be some of the best riders on the planet). It will be interesting to see whether the interest generated from FEST can lead to the money needed to make them sustainable, whether it will spark interest in some sort of athlete union as in traditional pro sports like hockey, baseball, or basketball, or whether FEST will simply fade away into obscurity. For now the FEST Series looks to be the most entertaining show on two wheels. As Aggy said, ''The Fest Series is for the riders, by the riders.'' Simply put, Aggy's Reunion is what freeride mountain biking is all about.

Freeride Competitions are dead! Or at least in the traditional understanding of what it was... Riding has evolved to a point where even the Red Bull Rampage has added a ton of crafted jumps, stepdowns and lines that it effectively has become the largest and most extreme Slopestyle event. Aggy's reunion and the Joyride are both Slope-style Events...

I dont know about you but Im still waiting for the Photo of the Year contest
  • 25 4
Um I don't see them taking SS bikes off those jumps.

I was expecting Rampage to win because of how insanely steep and progressive it was (and since Joyride is equally impressive every year but the event itself isn't ground-breaking), but I agree with this choice. Aggy's Reunion and the FEST series as a whole is going to bring in a new era of riding, much like what Rampage did in the first few years.

Photo of the year... hhahahahahhaha I think its safe to say both photo and video of the year is no longer of any importance to PINKBIKE.

All these events have there place, no need to choose which one is better

Joyride was by far the best slopestyle event. Aggy's reunion (debatable) the best freeride event. Pinkbike please seperate these two awards! The fest series is nothing like the FMB

 uhhhhhmmmm how about....NO

dont bother with being unaccepting, i'm just stating my opinion, which is that comparing fest events with fmb events (apart from rb rampage) is a bit strange. Don't get me wrong, but i think this years joyride had more people sitting on the tip of their chair while rooting for their fav rider than watching agyy & co jump huge jumps for fun. although both exciting, they are two different things

Maybe @HutchJR would prefer a "most spectated" award? The FEST is the best. It should have won "Innovation of the Year"!
  • 3 0
Amen brother the fest series and slope events are completely different. HutchJR hit the nail on the head! Should be best slope event and a best freeride event.
  • 4 0
Definitely gonna agree with HutchJR here. Well said mate
  • 3 1
Spot on. They need to be split. Not fest and fmb but freeride and Slopestyle/event. One has rules set course set times the other is just ridding your bike (big) with your mates.
  • 29 3
Wait, What? I thought Fest didn't exist to these awards. Nice.
  • 8 6
I don't think any fest events were nominated, but the backlash in the comments was pretty strong. They must've seen the light.
  • 9 0
Aggy Reunion was in the nominees when they published the article!
  • 2 0
My bad. I was thinking of the "highlight of the year" nominations. No Fest represented there.
  • 12 1
 FEST series is super rad!
But why do all these articles keep mentioning Zink's rampage run? He did one big 360, got lost on course and somehow found his way to 2nd. The 360 was insane but the run was too disconnected for a high podium spot...
  • 3 0
I kinda think comparing these 3 events is a bit useless... they're all insane in their own way, but in my opinion they are too different to put them all up for the same award.
  • 3 1
Nico Vinc Fest! Those were by far the biggest jumps ever! and when we realized holy shit this is another benchmark!... Some how kamloops it was more expected cause big lines were allready there and we saw them in Semenuk series before...
  • 19 17
Could they draw these awards out any longer, it's been almost an entire month if 2015 just publish the winners and move on to real content please!
  • 8 5
Yeah cuz, everyone just loves to have news all the news blurted out in one day...

Who is propping this guy, shame on you.

Me, or the dude criticizing PB? I hate non-constructive criticism of this site. I fail to understand how anyone is on it if they don't like it...I f'in love it and think it is the best option for MTB content on the web (yes, there are many good option, but for me PB is top)
  • 3 2
 @diego-b The guy criticising PB
  • 2 1
I think they could have released the nominees earlier and gave out the awards closer to the new year so then its more of a reflection of the past year rather than dragging it out like this. But either way its cool to look back on all the cool shit that went down last year.

Quit complaining , pinkbike posts real content everyday!!!

Faith in PB audience restored ( a little) for neg propping thisspock after he was top comment for a while!

Hoff fest. The Andreu/sorge pov line was by far the gnarliest of the year other than rampage, in my opinion at least.
  • 1 0
I'm sure there was other good FR/Slopestyle events other than Joyride and Rampage.

Seems nobody realizes the FMB has other events other than those two.
  • 4 1
joyride is the best slopestyle contest every year
