The second round of the Real Insurance MTB Gravity Cup/Aussie National Series has wound up at Mt Buller with Troy Brosnan beating out Sam Hill by 5.35 seconds to take the win, Bryn Atkinson in 3rd. On the women's side it was Tracey Hannah over Jill Kintner, and then Shelly Flood. Connor Fearon beat out Thomas Crimmins for the Jr Men's win, with Jack Moir in third. Connor's time would have put him in 4th place in the Elite Men's Category.

Weather conditions- Hot and sunny.
Track conditions- Dry, Square edge rocks, round rocks, few wooden bridges, mild slope, tight, narrow trail, lots of gum trees, and a couple fast fire road sections.

Jill Kintner had this to say about the day:

Tracey put in another solid time. She is a former World Cup DH winner, and has been training flat out for her comeback. I didn’t really see her ride that much, but she will be a contender again.

My run went ok. Had a lot of positive stuff come from the weekend, so I am happy, not the run I wanted in a couple spots, little detour, but all good. I have made tons of progress with my riding and fitness, and will continue to improve.

Troy Brosnan seems to be on a bit of a roll, winning both the quali and the final here at Buller. I didn’t see him ride much, but from what I know of his style and how tight the track was, this place suited his style of floating through rough stuff with precision, bit of fire road pedaling too, which he nailed, such a racer head these days. He always says “My run was sick” so yeah, that’s all I got for you.

Sam finished 2nd with a pinned run. He’s looking really strong as well, and having a little ankle biter like Troy will surely motivate him to up his game a bit and have to work for it. He had a pretty good podium speech which made a few people chuckle. MTBA is kinda unique to do podium speeches for all 5 people.

Bryn finished 3rd, which is really quite amazing for his first race on a new bike, and after all that time recovering from the femur/ elbow injuries. Lesson to be learned about dedication to rehab!. Think he inspired a lot of people, I know I was really proud of him.

photo

Ricky Boyer for the 4th. Also a solid racer, consistent and fast. Think he has some go-pro footage somewhere. Sure hope so, cause he was wearing a camera mounted to the top of his helmet 24-7. Found this link to some of his older footage to show some of the race tracks here in oz.

Big Cat- Rhys Atkinson rounded out the podium. Little bro has some serious talent on a DH bike, he is on the edge, really fast, and has incredible line selections. Think he’ll have a crack at a few World Cups and surprise some people. He’s now 3rd in the points battle for the series.

Our good pal Cillian finished 9th, well done! Stacked field for an Aussie national.

Honestly, I didn’t see too much this weekend to report. I was having a lot of fun riding, and just doing my own thing. Really chilled environment, not too many fans unfortunately. XC bandits were off completely separate doing their thing, we cooked our own food the whole time, watched tennis every spare moment, and just kept it mellow. Not a very social experience, even though everyone loves to hang out and have a few laughs. Buller is just not really the setting for it, very isolated, only a couple places to eat maybe. The closest town is 40 minutes away in Mansfield, but the majority of people have to get home for Monday workday.

Don't you just love the eyebrows.

 So bushy, so epic.
  • 5 1
LOL I never noticed the THUNDERBROW before!!!

Forget the eyebrows, look how much weight he's lost. He's been doing some serious training. And you don't do serious training without wanting to be serious about racing.

road bikers shave their legs to go faster .. so think about it.. if sam shaved his eyebrows he'd beat troy ?
  • 24 1
Actually swimmers shave to go faster, most road riders I know shave not for speed, but so that they heal up cleaner when they hit the road at speed and scrap all their skin off...

REVISION: Troy finished 1st with a pinned run. He’s looking really strong, and having a little ankle biter like Sam will surely motivate him to up his game a bit and have to work for it.. hahaha

Brosnan beats Hill? That kid is going places...
  • 1 0
Brosnan beat everyone other than Danny Hart at world champs, granted the conditions were different... slower rolling and gloopier for the juniors but faster rolling and washed out with poor visibility for the big guys.

Yeah I want to hang out with Tony Davis and get some tips, just look at his son jacko taking 3rd in u17s!! Yeah jacko!!

Sam's comment to Troy after coming second again was funny in his dry humor at preso. "We're gona have to do something about that" Gold!

If Sam's brows were proved to be a 'Samson-esque' source for his power, you'd all be trying to grow them.

The thing is, a young gun like Troy (as well as Danny Hart, Brook Macdonald, Josh Bryceland, etc) will go 110% at every race they do, even if it is'nt a world cup. I think the older riders, (Sam Hill for one) won't go anywhere near that at a small race like this. Troy, being young has the 'flat out, no fear' way of racing, which Hill did have when he was on top of the world cup circuit a few years back. Things have changed, and having the experience/crashes/etc Hill has had, he will be taking a different approach to races like this. I recon if Hill was going 110% (which I'm pretty sure he would'nt have been) at this race, it would have been Troy 5 seconds back. Anyone agree?
  • 5 0
Agree, Troy was going for it all this weekend. Sam looking a lot fitter and in more shape he is notgoing to throw it away on a race like this. It will be a different story come world cup time. But Troy is fast, wasn't he a consistently top ten finisher last year?
  • 4 0
Yeh he is fast. And is fast enough to be a top 10 finisher at every world cup, if not better. But, I think if Hill gets back up to speed, Gwin is in trouble.
  • 4 1
 No. Razz

I think putting 5 seconds on Troy would take some doing right now. Not sure that Sam is quite back to that level yet...

I disagree, only because Sam was back at Champery also.
It has nothing to do with 110%, it has more to do with the top boys now are more focused on the goal.
I would love to see Sam on a Horse giving it beans again, but that is just not going to happen.

Remove Gee at Champery as he slid down like a penguin and you can see the young boys getting faster and taking over since 2009, and they are getting faster.
Greg has not moved much, he is Mr Consistent, 2012 will be the big test for him, or if he has stepped it up (he was coming off injury into 2011), then will he be back on top again?

Sam will never beat Troy again unless he crashes.
  • 2 0
Sam looked like he was on edge in his run, and i saw him make a few mistakes which just shows that he would of been going 110% to get the win. Troy didnt look as wild or as on edge as sam which is good for this trck as u need to be consistent and try to keep your composure. In my opinion this track just suited Troy completely.

But what about the last round?

And what about Troy getting the second fastest time at Worlds in what people were saying were greasier conditions than Hart's run?

Don't get me wrong I think Sam is an incredible rider but that kid is something else. You Aussies have a lot to be proud of.
  • 3 0
i wouldnt be suprised if sam is really chilling out in these races and just having fun. He had a dodgy year last year and his heart didn't seem in it, so I reckon hes just trying to have fun again, then come world cup time he will kill it! Just my predictions...the last 2 races hes been smiling despite not winning, he wouldn't smile if he had cared that much!
  • 2 0
Sam has already said he wants to win but isn't pushing the National Series as he is using it to get his bike skills back up as he really hasn't been riding for 2 years. So to be only behind Troy on a track which suits Troy..... Get ready world "SAM if on the HUNT!!!" and "team Monster Spec" will have a big year!!!!

Troy, is on it! He has been doing XC races here in adelaide! He came second on his stumpjumper in B class! Few of the downhill guys have been doing it!
  • 4 2
5 full seconds, I think Troy will be on it 2012 WC season and Sam has a carrot to chase to get faster. Who would have thought Sam would be playing catch up to Troy?
  • 1 0
Looked quiet up there. So many more people were there for the State Series round the week before. The whole mountain was pumping. Shame Jill wasn't there to see that as the atmosphere was way better.

there's a lot of hype about hill this pre-season. Troy won and this article is more about him. I hope the media just knows more than we do, which is a good chance. Think this will be an incredible season for hill.
