Reality Redesigned: Submissions Now Open

Dec 18, 2011 at 22:03
by Julian Coffey
Pinkbike and The Edge Factor are now accepting submissions for Reality Redesigned. R2 is what happens when the biggest names in North American manufacturing, design and engineering throw open the doors and allow both mountain bikers and designers alike to have at it. Have no doubt, this is full access to a full on mountain bike design competition with legitimate resources, and up to $40,000 in prizes.

Reality Redesigned is a whole new concept - a design contest with a reality show twist. Students and bike enthusiasts from Canada and the U.S. will be invited to submit designs into one of 3 design categories. The submissions will be analysed and professionally critiqued by industry experts. Jeremy Bout, host and producer of the highly acclaimed Edge Factor show, will take us coast to coast introducing the Judges. Here are the first 2 episodes:

Once all the submissions are in and screened, Reality Redesigned will track the top drawings via the leader board, as the judges critique them. An ever-present POV camera will capture the process from beginning to end, providing a unique opportunity to watch the idea go from drawing board to finished product. Teaming up with Pinkbike, The Edge Factor team presents 3 design categories:

DESIGN CATEGORIES

1. FRAME
2. SUSPENSION
3. COMPONENTS

Have a design problem? We're looking for any and all bike related design issues that fall into one of those 3 categories. Contestants will pick one and submit their design idea in that category. The submissions will be taken through a rigorous screening process. The better the idea, the clearer the presentation, the more points it will get. The more points you get, the better your chances will be that you will make the top spot on the leader board.

CHECK OUT THE SUBMISSIONS PAGE

When the dust settles, after all submissions are in and all the prints have been screened...we will then see who is at the top. Top 3 in each of the categories will make up the 'Final Nine' in March 2012. The general public audience will be able to vote on their favorite designs and the submission that stays on the leader board with the most 'yes' votes when the vote closes in April, will win a pimped out, hand built Intense.

Submissions for the contest will close at the end of February and then the real fun begins. Judges will work through these nine submissions, assigning point values to each of the finalists. This is an amazing opportunity for students and aspiring designers to have their designs and ideas looked at by some of the top minds in the industry, and ridden by some of the best riders in the world. Reality Redesigned promises to be a contest filled with key insights into the amazing world of design, engineering and manufacturing.

IDEAS

We got the guys from Straitline Components, Intense Cycles, and Cane Creek Cycling Components and MTB rider, Mike Montgomery to weigh in on some things they'd like to see design solutions for. Josh Coaplen from Cane Creek has a few example suspension ideas he'd love to see sorted:

PATENTS AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

This has been a hotly contested debate, quite evident in the feedback from the PB community regarding Reality Redesigned. In response, we have put together a very thorough overview on patents, hopefully bringing designers and the public alike some insight. In the first of four information videos, patent lawyer Andrew Lahser talks about:

1. What a patent does.
2. What public disclosure means.
3. The costs associated with patents.
4. Why Reality Redesigned may be an option for you.

Hi everyone! I am pretty sure that I am not the only one in Europe who really wants to enter to this contest too. It´s a shame for us.
  • 2 2
Count me in. But CAN SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME AN IDEA WHICH MTB COMPONENT SUCKS THE MOST AND WHY IT NEEDS FIXING/REDESIGNING.
  • 1 0
I email'd them and they said it is open to North Americans only. That really sucks. With engineering powerhouses like Germany and the UK competing, I think the stakes would be so much higher for the contest. I'm really bummed cause I was already putting down some ideas in Solidworks. They also said they're considering to make the contest worldwide next year.
  • 16 0
Hey Guys - Jeremy from Edge Factor here. I would love to have been able to include everyone in this contest. I was fully planning to do this, but then the lawyers got involved. For this to be a full on legal project, we have to register this contest in every country and even in some of the states....and every country has its own set of rules. The cost of doing this type of research and registration made it impossible to go beyond US and Canada for this season. Our intentions are to do it bigger and better next year, so we will see how this season goes!
  • 2 2
 That sucks Frown

Well done to EdgeFactor for giving a prompt and clear answer
If anyone wants to propose a front mech the doubles as an Idler to overcome the chainring vs ideal suspension centre that I proposed initially as a simple but effective idea feel free :o)

This is a good competition, I'll be glad if you could include the Europeans next year, Jeremy.

I have a year to get working on my designs. Wink 3

Fair enough, fingers crossed for a worldwide contest next year!

(although by then I won't be a full time student so probs won't be eligable to enter, balls Razz )
  • 1 0
Hi Jeremy, thank You for Your explanation. We will looking forward to next year! JJ

"But CAN SOMEONE PLEASE GIVE ME AN IDEA WHICH MTB COMPONENT SUCKS THE MOST AND WHY IT NEEDS FIXING/REDESIGNING."

For me something to eliminate derailleurs. Internal gear box that matches the weight of current drivetrains.
  • 2 1
Why would someone give YOU an idea when they could develop it themselves?

You're preaching to an empty space dude.
  • 1 0
dwdw, if you are having a hard time thinking of something, watch the sample idea videos from Straitline, Mike, Intense, and CaneCreek to give you some ideas.
  • 1 0
mr-ronton, people have problems, others have solutions. Hes looking for a problem someone cant solve but ye it would be better if he found the problem himself.
  • 2 0
I've thought of a few ideas so far. tup

And, my bad. I thought he was asking for th solution so to speak. Confused

How about an adjustable seatpost under 100 dollars that has at least 6" of travel and remote travel adjust. Bonus points for compact insertion height so it works on frames with curved seat tubes.
  • 1 1
Hate to hear this about non-amerikanos being banned from competition .. But hey, I can`t find single a fu*k to give, so I guess this winter I`ll be shredding and not geeking behind my comp... YEEEEEEEAH!!
Thank you EdgeFactor, you`re the factor!
  • 1 0
that'd be very hard to do @kitejumping, it would be very heavy, flexy, short service life, and it'd be easier to buy a good one which lasts longer and functions better.
  • 1 0
Only for America, fine then il use Autodesk...
  • 6 0
Perhaps we need some new innovative bottom bracket sizes& hub axles sizes
It would be good to have more headset options as well ....we counted different bb crank interfaces while ago it was like 37
Not including bmx... Jk innovation is good
  • 2 0
 Right on! i hate it when everyone has diffrent gear... 142x12, 157x12 150x12, 150x10, 135x10, 135x12, 9mm QR, 15mm, 20 mm... F-U-C-K
  • 3 0
I know, lets develop a device with numbers on it, that can make what we could call a phonecall, then use the same medium and transmit data and call it the Internet.... move it on and invent video over the internet and call it Skype, and make it free. Just got rid of your flights etc from the bill. Would hate to do weekly development update's to client face to face as our clients are all over the world, all that travelling for 1 to 2 hours work!
  • 6 3
I am not too sure if that many people on this website can come up with a totally custom frame design that would still function properly. Should be interesting to see what comes out of this though
  • 15 2
 i reckon you'r be surprised
  • 2 1
I reckon ur wrong...PB is mostly a riders community, those ones who ride and design cycling stuff are the huge minority here. This contest should be advertised in unis, where people actually study about engineering..
  • 5 3
I do not really understand this competition. Not really sure how a every day rider can develop a better bike than a large company that puts millions of dollars into research. I am sure some people might draw some cool bikes, but actually having one that improves, or is even comparible to the current standards large companies have? I doubt it
  • 5 1
I'm sure there are plenty of 'every day riders' that work as engineers or designers, or are studying in those fields. Not everyone on PB is an illiterate simpleton. But really you don't need much experience to have a good idea. It doesn't need to be a complicated product like a frame or suspension, it could be something fairly simple like a saddle or some handlebar grips...
  • 2 0
Well last I checked this competition was not about saddles and handlebar grips. It was about complicated products like a frame or suspension. Oh and saddles really are not that simple either. Lots of compaines have 100s of hours of testing done on materials, design, etc. I am not sayign PB does not have some smart people on it, but I just do not see it having members with acces to develop products that could work well in the industry. I think that would be better suited for universities, etc
  • 1 0
Well on the contest page the 3 categories are frame, suspension or components, so the bike as a whole is you oyster really.

I understand that a tonne of work goes into all components (at least I'd hope so), but some would be a lot easier do design than a set of suspension forks for example.

The competition is only open to students, so the chances are that they will have access to software and/or machinery at their colleges/universities that will let the prototype and develop their ideas to a high standard.
  • 2 0
dingus, development engineering is sometimes about thinking outside the box. Combining ideas from the bike and other industries, or just having an idea that nobody else has out there.
Example:
Q: How to remove unsprung mass from the rear, with improving reliability?
A: re-engineer the rear mech, it is not just the mech but the chain that passes through it that contributes to un-sprung mass
.Q: How to re-engineer the rear mech?
.A: Is the lower cage required if you have your tensioner up front?
..Q: How to place a front tensioner that is safe from strikes (must be on the lower side currently
..A: Reduce the size of the front chainring to make space
... the questions go on, but there is a solution (and you must use a chain as it is the most efficient solution).
  • 3 2
It will look like a Trek
  • 2 0
FYI, read the rules and this contest is open to students only: "15 years of
age or older and enrolled and attending, as a full-time student at any accredited school college
or university in the United States or Canada."

Guess I'm out! That's OK - I wish the best of luck to all those aspiring creative engineering minds out there!
  • 2 0
Yeah its funny they do that. If they were smart they would allow it for everyone. Sure you would have to go through more entries but you could find that one gold mine of an idea and it would be a win for the company.
  • 2 0
This sounds like a great contest, you should keep it a "Clown Free Contest". Don't give Clowns a chance to shine, like they do on American Idol and Drangon's Den. Do this by not hiring clowns like Simon Cowell and Kevin O'leary who encourage clowns to share and then thrive on belittling them. You should also include some kind of Royalty claus for the winner, cause Dude, $40,000 is squat!
Deep down inside I can't help feeling like this is really about someone making money off someone elses ideas.
  • 2 0
There is another episode posted already too guys! Just click the link under the Episode 1 for the next one, it will take you to the Reality Redesigned area of Pinkbike.com!
  • 1 1
What we all need is a universal head set that is easy to fit that my 6yo girl could fit and extra space rings that can go under the race to lower or raise the head tube angle. I dono about you guys but im so sick of bursting head sets trying to get them in and out they fucking suck some1 should sort this out and also steerer tubes we need an industry standard for them to.
  • 3 1
I'm definitely not an engineer - as i think i'm about to prove - but i was wondering if i was the only one who thought that maybe screw-in headsets (like BB - not like classic threaded headsets) wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm sure there's a good reason for this - but i can't help feeling that if they could be screwed in then you wouldn't need all kinds of expensive tools for their insertion and extraction - just a BB spanner and i can't imagine that they'd strip out either given as it would be supported by the fork crown and the stem.

Aside from that .... just what the world needs another headset standard - and new frames all round yay!!! I'm sure Shimano would be delighted.

Other thing i thought would be clincher bolts either end of the head tube (like the Commencal Supreme - minus the headtube adjust) so you could just slot the headset in like a seatpost with a little grease and then tighten it up - away you go....

Anyone feel free to use... if these ideas are not totally shiznax.
  • 2 1
Those ideas raise some good points jackclark and brings home the reason (in my opinion) for this whole thing. Get some fresh eyes and minds on this area to come up with something new. Thanks for your input!
  • 1 1
 @ Jackclark89

You can have way better alignment with press fit items versus threaded. Appart from that, making a precice thread is REALLY expensive and pretty difficult to do. Not saying it's impossible, but it is very challenging (especially for an internal thread). It's more convenient to make a precice diameter hole for press fit.

p.s. threaded headsets do exist, on 50 pound bikes sold at asda.
  • 1 1
...and yet there's a precise thread on nearly every bike in existence - in the BB shell. It sounds like the excuse not to do this is more of a manufacturers issue which they pass on to the consumers - which I was trying to address (ie fewer, more accessible tools and ease of use). That said, if you get better alignment with press-fit, then that is perfectly legitimate.

Also, as I said I wasn't referring to classic threaded headsets in my post.

Cheers for your response.
  • 1 0
...which could be one of the reasons, not to mention removing cost, that the latest BB standard is press fit. BB has moved to the way of the headset.
  • 2 0
yup,r.i.p derailleurs .all you need is 1) a international standard/simple fit.2) one cable mechanism to fit triggers shifter = rohloff beats all the others.
  • 1 1
This is pretty cool guys, we will be one of the judges and we ourselves will have to compete against Cane Creek and Intense bikes to win this. It is a cool way to look behind the scenes at what goes into making an idea come to life and hopefully stoke you out on a new career path. So enter regardless of your skill levels, you will have full support from Straitline's Engineers along with Cane Creek's and Intense's team to make your idea become a working model! Then we ride the thing! No idea is a dumb idea, go for it.

So it's only US and Canada specific? That sucks.
  • 2 0
3d printers are where its at! so cool how you can print out functional items that work as soon as you take them out of the printer.
  • 1 1
i think we can look for innovative ideas by looking at disc brakes on a car. What if bikes today had an anti-lock feature, so that if your coming fast down a decent and then approach a sharp corner, your not slamming on your brakes and risking going over the bars? Just a thought.....
  • 2 0
That patent guy does not tell you, is that if you disclose the idea, with out first getting a patent, it is public knowlage and is not patentable
  • 1 0
He does if you watch all the videos...
  • 1 0
Well thats the most important point, you can forget all the other waffle
  • 3 0
so kiwi's can't submit any ideas?
  • 5 0
neither can aussies... pretty gay aye mate
  • 3 0
I thought if Kiwis had and idea, they just went out and made it? Like carbon framed gearbox bikes - aye, no problem mate, give me a few months! Who needs Pinkbike?
  • 3 0
yup thats the next leap r.i.p the derailleurs
  • 6 3
Where are the bikes in this video?!...boring stuff
  • 2 0
This is a video simply introducing a judge, Marie Planchard, that is involved in the design contest. It's great to know that they have such qualified people backing them in this show.
  • 2 0
I am sure that it is not just open to North America, Well I am hoping thats the case anyway?.
  • 1 1
On the PB homepage it says on this article "Have no doubt, this is access to an international design competition" INTERNATIONAL?? Everyone else is saying it is just open to NA??
  • 4 1
United States and Canada, both in North America, but technically still international
  • 2 1
Technically, NA is international because there is multiple countries in the continent of NA. But yes, it is only open North American citizens.
  • 3 1
2 PatMan69 pinkbike is not saying they don't want you or like you thery're just saying you're not as important as us super smart Canucks/Yankees........for heaven's sake's we invented backbacon!!!! FEEL THE POWER !!! and the yanks built Chuck F@cking Norris!!!
  • 2 0
Backbacon and Chuck Norris, cant really argue with that can I lol Big Grin
  • 2 3
fairly informative, clearly giving everyone a light base as to the true background to manufacturing and design and entrepreneurship. although not as realistic probly cause its representing the general sence of it all. I mean that just cause your doing things like going to solidworks HQ and everything else. still pretty cool. and hella boring to watch, its like a micro summary of my schooling for the past 3 years and makes me wanna barf hahah no offence.
  • 2 2
just think about the thousands of dollars you've put into your schooling for the past 3/4 years and maybe you'll feel better about other people getting a vague understanding/idea of what it is you study and maybe give people credit for taking the time to take an interest....
It's like when I read some of the nutrition/training posts on here... I'm paying thousands of dollars to learn this at uni and get some letters behind my name. Some of the info posted on here is dumbed down or questionable (in the sense that the research evidence can go either way, it's not clear cut like the article makes it out to be) BUT I try to keep in mind that people are interested and it may give them a base to learn on or more respect for my field. Not trying to call you out, man... but the "barf" comment was a little bitchy.
If you really want to show ppl how it's done then enter a design!
  • 1 2
oops i think i may have taken your comment the wrong way... as in maybe you just wanna barf because you're sick of school.
  • 1 2
Barf cause schooling. Not cause of the video or information given...
  • 1 2
ima have to negative prop you for that one RBKA......
  • 1 1
HAHA! i'mma neg prop you back. gl on your exams.
  • 2 0
What exactly our videos should be for our submissions wasn't super clearly explained.
  • 2 0
Yes derailluars need improvment but geared hubs suck, just go for low profile derailluar, yes have patented this idea.
  • 2 0
its always stiffer & lighter never heavier & flexier
  • 2 0
 Derailleurs
  • 3 0
yeah get rid of derailleurs. everything should be internal now. geared hubs FTW!
  • 2 0
 lol
  • 1 1
gggrrrrrraaaaaaahhhhhh! I have a genius idea but I live in the Uk
  • 1 1
I don't get the whole thing! And what's the prizing?
  • 1 1
maybe I missed it, but when's the submission deadline?
  • 1 1
The deadline for submissions of Feb. 24. 2012 which gives you a fair amount of time but you have a better chance to winning a prize if you submit early so I am not going to wait.
  • 1 1
I want to talk to one of my professors about an idea I have but I dont go back till the 25th of january... hopefully it's enough time.
  • 1 1
I suggest email. Most professors are on campus during student vacations. And if you're really anxious to talk to someone, talk to one of their grad students. They never leave, lol.
