The fifth edition of Darren Berrecloth's Bearclaw Invitational Slopestyle takes place this August 2-4 at Mount Washington Alpine Resort on Vancouver Island.

The Bearclaw Invitational is the last Gold level stop on the Freeride Mountain Bike World Tour. The event presents an ideal opportunity for riders to distance themselves ahead of the rest of the field before heading into the final two Diamond level events of the season.

bigquotesThis year's course will be very similar to last season's with a few tweaks included to spice things up. We have the big line setup for the boys to throwdown and a new line for an amateur comp we're hosting on the Friday before the main event on Saturday. - Darren Berrecloth

The Bearclaw Invitational's trademark is the quality of course design. Challenging and innovative, the course has morphed over the last few years into what Berrecloth describes as “a perfect site in the trees where riders, photographers, filmers and fans can all get stoked”.

Organic and burly, the event site last season was compared to an “Ewok village for freeride mountain biking” by riders and fans alike. Utilizing the same course with the same look and feel of 2011 was high on Berrecloth's list of priorities.

And true to his word, a savings in course construction cost has now generated a substantial prize purse. The 2012 cash haul has been set at $30,000, a $10,000 increase from the 2011 event.

Vying for the prize include a who's who of the FMB World Tour. This year's rider list includes: 2011 tour champion Brandon Semenuk, Cam Zink, Sam Pilgrim, Martin Soderstrom, Anthony Messere, Mike Montgomery, Sam Reynolds, Thomas Genon, Cameron McCaul, Yannick Granieri, Greg Watts, Kurt Sorge, Darren Berrecloth, Geoff Gullevich, Amir Kabbani, Mitch Chubey, Antoine Bizet, Symon Godziek, Niki Leitner, Tyler McCaul, Peter Henkhe, Brett Rheeder, Andrew Taylor, Zedje Thomas, Casey Groves, Lance McDermott, Jakub Vencl, Graham Agassiz, Andreu Lacondeguy, Kyle Strait and Ryan Howard.

An amateur slopestyle event on Friday, August 3rd will provide the chance of a lifetime for many riders. The event will be limited to 60 competitors with the top two finishers moving on to ride at the pro level in the Bearclaw Invitational's main event on Saturday, August 4th.

“I want to give the local shredders a chance to compete,” says Berrecloth. “The course will feature a medium sized drop to a big four pack with a quarter pipe to finish and on top of that, there will be some sweet prizing for the competitors.”

Rampage happens every two years. its not on this year is it? Im not too sure. If Rampage is on this year then Rampage is slightly better. Even then, the claw builds all the gnarliest lines anyway.
  • 120
Yup every two years and it is happening this year! I wonder when Whistler will bring Darren on to design and build the joyride course? That could be insane.
  • 220
pretty sure rampage is going to be every year now because they got a deal with NBC to have it broadcasted nationally here in the US
  • 130
^^^^ If thats true, that is freaking awesome.
  • 50
 Yep it's every year now!
  • 50
 Holy mother of awesomeness....
  • 60
Broadcasted on NBC? Thank you Cam Zink.
  • 20
@ scott-townes I'm pretty sure the Claw already helped design the Joyride course last year. Along with Zink and Semenuk and M. Montgomery, if I'm not mistaken
  • 10
lux- how big was his role because I'm thinking along the lines of having him being the head builder and designer.
  • 10
yeah I know what you meant Smile . He didn't have the same role as the head builder but I do think they really listened to their input
  • 10
@ reillykintzele you better not be yanking my chain if your right that would be sooo sick it would bring in even more riders

I find it ironic that the digger has case written on it.

  • 40
The Claw has some serious calves
  • 40
Somehow, I don't see Reynolds in top shape for this beast of a course.

I better hit the road, takes a few days from toronto to the island! Gotta get out and support... the beer garden revenues! And my favorite sport in the world!!!

  • 30
WHY ISN'T MT WASHINGTON OPEN YET?????? >_
  • 11
 Still too much snow apparently
  • 30
Pft only cause they aren't shoveling -_-
  • 20
We open up on the 28th. Things are nice and dry down low with a bit of snow shovelled out of the way up top. We're fixing the features that got crushed so things should look pretty dialed for opening day. Claw's course is at the bottom of the hill so all of the snow is gone...but there was still some snow on it a couple of weeks ago...just hotted up in the last week and a half up here!
  • 21
i cant wait to watch this again, its like the only exciting thing that happens in the valley all year!
  • 20
Tomas Zejda is Zedje Thomas Smile ?
  • 20
I think that the "Degree Men®" logo should have been bigger
  • 10
all dirt jump courses should be built in woods, then they will never suffer from wind issues, plus its just nicer.
