Gesundaberget has during the summer fulfilled part 1 of a long term commitment which aims to put the resort on the mountainbike map. An international crew with some of the best designers in the world has made it happen. The result is a new freeride trail, built on the same principles as the ”A-line” in Whistler (CAN) and a new 4-cross track with international measurements.Gesundaberget is a resort which has been known for a long time within the Swedish bike community because of its fantastic downhill trails. The decision to develop mountain biking is a part of a new strategy which has the purpose to use the fantastic possibilities the mountain has to offer to mountain bikers. Gesundaberget is situated near the biggest populated areas in Scandinavia (Stockholm and Oslo) which of course is an important aspect for fast living people. The aim is to be the leading mountain bike destination within three years.
In order to obtain the targets, Gesundaberget has engaged an international team of one of the best architects within the industry. The most known name, Steve Murphy (NZL) has been the head designer of both trails. Steve has previously been involved in both designing and building trails in Canada and New Zeeland. The rest of the crew at Gesundaberget has been David Rimmel (UK), John Roche (IRL), Justin Hawxhurst (USA) and Per Danielsson, a local from Gesunda. Steve, who has experience from the entire world, considers the two new trails at
Gesundaberget among the best he has been working with.
- You don’t have to go to Whistler anymore, we bring Whistler to you, says Steven Murphy who is always the first one to test his trails before letting anyone else in.
– Good trails is not all about elevation, more important is the topography and the quality of the soil. I have to say that Gesundaberget has an enormous potential of becoming the name on every ones lips, he continues.
The work this year has been concentrated on two main parts. The first part was to improve the existing trails, which was made during May and June. This will be an ongoing work in the future but the level has risen considerably since last year.
The second part is just about completed and consists of:
•”Magic carpet” is the name of a totally new freeride trail which measures 2 km in length. “Magic carpet” consists of berms, jumps, tables and many features that a real freeride trail should have. The trail can compete with the best trails there are today.
•A totally new 4-cross competition track, the biggest in Sweden.
•Better infrastructure e.g. bike washers, storage facilities etc.
As a start up of the new mountainbike project at Gesundaberget there will be held two competitions within the Swedish downhill cup and the 4-cross cup. These events will be held the 1-2 of September and also means that all trails will be available for usage except the competition tracks during training and competition.
