I think I counted 1 pedal stroke in that entire video, ridiculous

Great weekend as always at the esc races. check out photos from this race and previous races on the north east at www.pinkbike.com/u/paulhanson or his older profile www.pinkbike.com/u/rider076

East coast gnar: trying to find a spot where you can slow down so you dont eat S***. West coast gnar, trying to find places to pedal so you can hit the "gnar" faster... haha
  • 2 1
yeah....no. MTB forums seem to be the only place in the world where people think east coast mountains are taller, steeper and rockier than west coast and mountain states mountains. I guess all those professional geologists don't know anything!

Obviously you've never ridden west coast trails

I think you misunderstood my post Sacramento kid.

Dude I was responding to the original comment, I'm siding with you.

All I ever see is footage of doubletrack with groomed jumps and berms. Put some videos up of the west side showin off its non-groomed singletrack then homie! (I'm just teasing, but seriously. haha)

10 years ago, back when the trail was actually kinda "groomed" before the fires. goo.gl/l1Mlc or this goo.gl/UMpSv

Thats gettin there. Picture that gnarly rock garden stuff with ridiculous root sections strewn in on every drop and/or off camber turn for half a mile of vertical. Then go ride it on opening day when its still wet and nothing has been beaten down yet... broken bashguard and a new dent in your frame? Check! Nothing against groomed trails though- I enjoy them just as much as the crazy s***.

Just found this vid and though it was a damn good representation of what we were discussing.

Ehh, most of those trails are clearly going perpendicular to the fall line of the mountain most of the time. Looks like annoying flat rock gardens to me. And not really that rocky.

That looks like so much fun and it appears you all lucked out with the weather! Good deal

I raced it and the track is unbelievably fun and techy and fast. the mud in some areas was crazy too
  • 1 0
hell yeah. looks like there's plenty of run-out if you wanted to just go straight downhill in the grass w/o touching your brakes. nice.

It's a well known fact that videos, especially amateur level videos, make stuff look much more mellow than it is... I wish DH was so big in NE back when I lived there it looks fun!

It's growing, but there are still areas with no lift access for 3 hours in any direction. A local ski resort is finally in talks to open up to lift access, but they are moving very slow. It is a real estate investment group that owns it so they are afraid they will scare away legitimate vacationers if the riffraff start showing up with bikes. The bunch of idiots has no clue how much money is spent and what kind of people ride mountain bikes. They think it is a poor man's sport and they have their noses up in the air at the poor and their heads so far up their butts they can't see a thing going on around them. That might be why they are going out of business for the second time in 10 years. It also explains why it is cheaper to fly to Park City and stay in a super nice chalet for a week, ski every day, and eat out every night, and then fly back than it is to stay at their 900 ft tall ski hill and ski for a week on the crappy conditions. Makes me so mad I could poop in a sock and throw it at their collective houses!

Whoa, sorry, what was the topic? Oh, yeah, the sport is growing out here, finally.

Hah, hey as long as it's cheaper just come out here and enjoy the pow and sunshine! Smile

I didn't see anything in that video that my six inch bike couldn't handle. I've been snowboarding at Sugarbush and with the terrain available there they could've built a way better DH trail.
  • 3 1
yeah you may have been able to ride a 6in bike down it but it wouldn't have been nearly as fast or smooth as a dh bike and as in most videos it doesn't do it justice.
  • 3 1
you could ride that whole track on a 6 inch travel bike for sure. but the speeds that you hit on that track are what makes it so good. It is the best track in the country in my opinion and I have raced just about everywhere. When you ride that track at race pace it is one of the roughest tracks out there.

Having not ridden the track in person, most of us can't entirely judge the difficulty, but it does look pretty tame by the standards of the WC DH tracks that we are more exposed to and thus more approachable on a shorter travel bike than those insanely gnarly DH courses.
  • 1 1
haha that guys bike is so crusty at 3:44
  • 2 0
yeah Ive been snowboarding before. and man I thought all the guys on trail bikes were going to win too!

Looks pretty flat to me. Glad everyone's enjoying it, it just looks like there's a lot of pedaling to be done to get up a good head of steam in a lot of sections. I'm sure maybe the camera makes it look flatter though.

I'm not saying that it doesn't look fun and all. I'm just saying that the terrain is there for them to build something better than that. I didn't even see anyone' fork bottom out in the video, looked like they used half their travel at best. Sugarbush has the money too, it's a damn nice resort in the winter. They can afford to build trails better.
  • 2 1
Go ride the course on your 6 inch bike, and get back to me on it. Videos make most every terrain look easy and flat, trust me , its plenty steep, fast, and very rough, with an unlimited source of roots and rocks! And as far as pedaling goes, its pretty steep, and pedaling was not needed much until the bottom finish area. There are a lot of spots that you really do not need to pedal, you need to brake, or it may not not end well.

I'm not basing my opinion on the quality of the video alone. I know low quality video doesn't do things justice. I'm basing this opinion on the amount of suspension travel used by all the bikes in the video.... Which wasn't much. Also I've been to that mountain many times and know for a fact that they could do way better if they tried, the terrain is there if they wanted to build a better trail. Access roads for trucks should not be part of a DH trail.
  • 1 0
yup. lotta double track in that video.

I've ski'd Sugarbush... "Steep" isn't a proper word. "inclined" but far from "steep" except maybe a cliff.

For comparison: Even the wider two tack "transfer" segments @ Mt. Hood Ski Bowl are MUCH steeper/rockier/faster/Techy'er.

The track is a lot more difficult then this video makes it look, the rock garden at 3:36 is one of the sketchiest rock gardens i have ever ridden. it starts out as a blind entrance and theres two possible lines, you can ride over the rocks (the line i take) but if you are off by a few inches you are gonna go down hard. the other line is to the right on the dirt next to the rocks buts its so narrow that its very easy to smash your ankles against stuff. Saying that you can ride it and actually doing it are completely different, and so what if you can "handle" it on your six inch bike, I have ridden the track on my santa cruz heckler and let me tell you, it sucks! Oh and the access roads are what you ride to get to the course, the start is at the bottom of the first road in the video.

awesome video. sugarbush is the best track around
  • 1 0
I would much rather be doing this at the moment.
  • 2 2
That course was just as difficult as the Windham world cup course..

the idea of this sport....is going fast! come on guys!
