What is it: The novel looking FRIC stem may be lightweight at just 123 grams, but it is designed with freeriding and downhilling in mind. While the shape looks quite different than what you may be used to seeing, there is some reasoning behind the design. The stem's name is an acronym for "FreeRide Intelligent Clamp", which is the clever 260 degree handlebar clamp that Syncros claims does a better job of distributing load, and the stem's steerer clamp bolts have been positioned on the side of the body to lessen the pain of those inevitable knee strikes. The FRIC is available in a single 45mm length only and retails for $79.95 USD.

The details: The stem's unique shape is produced via a cold forging process that Syncros claims gives the FRIC an impressive strength to weight ratio, with the finished product weighing just 123 grams. The stem's most notable feature is its FreeRide Intelligent Clamp that wraps 260 degrees around the handlebar (most bar clamps wrap 180 degrees) and is said to do a better job of dealing with handlebar load forces than a more standard arrangement. The extra clamping force created by the unconventional bar clamp also plays a part in the stem's light weight - less material is needed to do the same job. The stem's faceplate consists of two separate pieces, with the bar clamp bolts threading in reverse to what you are used to seeing. Any rider out there who has hit a knee on the rear of their stem will appreciate the FRIC's smooth backside that will undoubtedly be kinder on those unprotected legs when the inevitable does happen.

Performance: A bit of extra care needs to be taken when installing the FRIC stem, especially if you are going to be using a carbon handlebar. Because of the stem's 260 degree clamp, you'll need to insert the bar's skinnier tapered section (where your controls clamp) first and then slide the bar through until the clamping zone is positioned in the stem. I mounted up a Syncros AM Carbon riser bar and found that it was nearly impossible to do so without marring the finish slightly. Clamping the bar in place is also a bit of a chore given that the 4mm head hex bolts thread in reverse, making the lower two difficult to reach if you don't have a separate, small hex key. It is also very important to tighten the FRIC's 5mm hex head, steerer clamp bolts before the handlebar clamp. Not doing so will prevent the stem from clamping down onto the steerer properly. It should also be mentioned that if your headset needs tightening, you'll need to loosen the face plate bolts to allow the steerer tube clamp to relax its grip and allow you to tighten the headset.

Installation foibles aside, the FRIC stem does the job of holding your bars in place quite well. It feels as rigid and flex free as one could ever hope for, despite it weighing less than most cross-country intended offerings, and has been creak free during its entire time on the front of my bike. The stem never once rotated on the steerer despite a few heavy crashes, and the bar didn't slip in the clamp at any point during the test. Those who ride sans knee pads will appreciate the steerer clamp bolts position being on the side of the stem, making for a smooth and rounded backside that is a little easier on the knees. While the visuals may not appeal to everyone out there, it certainly does have a unique look that sets it apart from the rest. Given its rigidity relative to its weight, the $79.95 USD asking price sounds quite reasonable, especially considering that there are heavier and far more expensive stems to be had.

The FRIC stem certainly won't be for everyone due to its limited sizing options and finicky installation issues, but there is no denying that it manages to be both stiff and impressively lightweight - two major points in its favor and enough to win many riders over. It doesn't hurt that it has a $79.95 USD asking price, while not inexpensive, is less than many heavier and more generic looking stems out there as well.

 Great to see a review on PB that is not all roses. I thought that this stem would give the issues stated, if it was the solution then others would do it.
There is a FEA model somewhere from Answer indicating the stresses of the clamp. I seem to recall it was very green with no red in site. So have Syncros invented a problem that does not exist, or is it just the extra width of the Answer that prevents high stress areas around the clamp?

 solved a problem that didn't exist and also created a problem that didn't exist... how do i adjust my bar/stam again... damn... where's my manual... oops, dropped a bolt... honey, can you give me an extra hand for a minute?... damn... www.snycrossupport.com... damn.. guess i gotta take my grips, levers, shifters off... hope i can get these bars on for the weekend! (not to mention fugly)

 why wouldn't they just reverse the bolt direction, seems like that would eliminate any kind of install issues

 Reversing the bolt direction would be more of a major than first appears. Probably, it would mean they have to leave more metal around the points the bolts go through. Having the bolts thread into the main part of the stem would likely make it not so slick looking. Look at it closely, there is one hell of a lot of thought gone into this beauty.

 i would believe that its more of a patent issue then anything. theirs plenty enough material to have the bolt go from the outside in.

 It is actually for the reason that if someone were to over tighten the clamp, it would strip the threads of the face plate and not the body of the stem which is much cheaper to replace.

 All the stems i've ever run thread into the stem body, and i have yet to strip one out. Seems like engineering against a problem that doesnt exist. Gotta admit tho it looks pretty cool

 I've stripped them before and according to my LBS, it's very common... even at the shop.

 Stripping bolts is a rookie mistake. You can strip any bolt anywhere on a bike if you are a gorilla with no brains. The stem looks cool. I wish they had some more pictures, maybe trim the steertube so we can see what it would look like a normal persons bike? How often do you have to install handle bars? Get them on, get them set and then forget. Is it hard to get at them with a canecreek xx on 1.5? Do you have to tighten the bars in then slide the stem onto the headtube in that situation?

 Thanks for the insult, however you are far off on that statement. Bolts tend to seize after a long time of them being tightened down to a comfortable spec. Bolts on stems are the most common to be stripped even by the best mechanics because of using lightweight bolts that are too weak for their placement and also because if the come loose, one is screwed without a kiss. Safety trumps all, and any smart seasoned mechanic will agree.

 The assumption here is again, that the mechanic or rider has a brain and greases his bolts when they need it. We're not talking about some pavement pounder who leaves his bike in the rain on the back porch. If you want to claim that this stem will fail if it's not properly maintained, go right ahead.

 I'm all for protecting my knees.

On a side note about knees, twice I've been off the bike for some time when I've whacked my knee. Now I run a BMX stem pad on my stem just in case. It also doubles as a place to hang my sunnies/shades/clears on long climbs instead of sweating into or fogging up the lens.

 I wear Six Six One XC knee pads with D3O when I ride. They're thin, light, and they protect my knees from harm. I highly recommend them.

 One reason for bolt stripping is that steel & aluminum have a reaction that makes them weld together after a long time. Another is bolt stretch from over tightening. Aluminium hardware would solve problem one, but then all the gorillas out there would snap them left & right.

 I just got this stem last week and tried mounting up a BooBar in the 1.2 rise with no luck. Pretty much wasted my bars at the swoop. I called Syncros on the matter and they said it works on there bars. They make like 2 bars.

 My Pro FRS 50mm stem weighs 135g and doesn't have any of the issues here. It was also far cheaper

 i wouldnt think so, it looks near impossible to thread any bars with rise through the stem. if you run flat bars, it looks like it is a great stem for DJ though

 I'm concerned about the design....as you tighten up the steerer clamps, the inner faces of the bar mount will move out of axial alignment with the bar and therefore the bar will not seat properly against these faces causing possible stresses and/or unwanted movement.

 I thought of that too. All I can figure is that they have accounted for it, and that when properly torqued on the steerer the faces of the clamp are in axial alignment.
