Details Announced for the 2023 Malverns Classic

Aug 22, 2023

Words: Nick Bentley

It's that time of the year again! The Malverns Classic begins this Thursday and if you've already got tickets (or want to buy tickets on the door) you had best prepare for the biggest party in British mountain biking with a packed weekend of challenging and exciting events including flat-out racing across all disciplines including the 4X and Dual Slalom British National Championships. The UK's largest Trade/Expo with over 100 trade stands, live entertainment with live bands and DJs, licensed bar, free fun fair rides, dirt jumping, pump-track and the air bag!

The Malverns team are going bigger than ever this year with the music and riders, all in a chilled out friendly, fun and safe environment. Here’s a sneak peek at what you can expect over the weekend.

Thursday

Thursday night kicks off the event with the Pump Track Challenge, with amateur riders and pros alike smashing round the Malverns pump track with the tunes playing and the beer starting to flow.

Back by popular demand, founding member of Prodigy Leeroy Thornhill is back with his legendary set, you don't want to miss out on this!

What a send for a tiny rider easily sending it 3 bike lengths on his little balance bike

Friday

Friday sees the start of the Pinkbike Balance Bike and Rippers World Championships. These young riders battle it out across a few different disciplines, the first of which is the Quad Eliminator which will take place throughout the day on Friday.

There's some serious racing on Friday with the return of the British Cycling Dual Slalom National Championship being held for the first time at the Malverns Classic with the riders battling it out for that National Championship title.

No better view than a flat whip in the night sky

The highlight of Friday evening is for sure the 661 Mr Whippit - Whip Off, with some of the biggest riders around supported by plenty of the slope style riders from the DMR Dirt Wars trying to send it as sideways as they can under the floodlights with the tune pumping.

Friday nights music sees Andrew Dodd returning once again. Doddy as always throws it back to the old skool for some classic dance tracks from the golden era. Followed by Shades of Rhythm to finish off with a proper rave for a Friday night.

There s always time for a turn bar on your race run

Saturday

Saturday as always is Downhill day, and with a sold out race, this is surely going to be one not to miss!

The Rippers and Balance Bike kids take to the dual slalom track as well as the cross-country course.

For added bit of madness to Saturday the Lake Ride returns. What's not to love about seeing 2 people trying to race across a floating pontoon on jump bikes whilst having water hurled at them. All this added to by the baying crowd just sat waiting for one of them to fall in.

Saturday nights music is always a big night, with Oasis Maybe, The Classics then RatPack making sure the Malverns on a Saturday night is always a good party.

Sunday

Sunday's racing is dominated by another British Cycling National Championship, this time it's 4Xs opportunity to entertain the crowd and give somebody that opportunity to bag a National title. There's also Enduro racing all day and the Balance Bike and Rippers have a day of Downhill racing.

It's not just racing though, the Malverns is playing host once again to the DMR Dirt Wars Slope Style contest with some of the best riders in the UK riding some massive jumps right in the centre of the arena for everyone to enjoy.

One of the highlights of the entire event has to be the Retro Show and Shine. Nothing better than seeing mountain biking's royalty (the bikes at least) from our entire history on show for everyone to see. There's always something special at the Show and Shine.

These are just a few highlights of the events to watch at the Malverns, alongside these there will of course be over 100 trade stands with some new products being launched and deals to make the most of, as well as there being a free fun-fair for the whole weekend, slack lines, an air bag and every race track able to be ridden when racing isn't going on. All of this is brought to you in the amazing location of the Malvern Hills. It's a great opportunity for the UK riding community to get together, have some fun, race some bikes and maybe drink a beer or two. Tickets are available on the door, head over the Malverns Classic website below for full weekend details and pricing.

First time attending this year, really looking forward to it after always hearing good things previously!

Now, this summer you mention - when was it???

Was looking forward to going this year, didn’t realise you wasn’t allowed off the site once your in.Seems a bit of an odd rule.

For me the weird bit is that as a racer you can't enter, turn up, race and go home without paying for the rest of it ? Not everyone is into the 'scene' or the music or the festival, it would have been ace just to turn up and race, but the costs were massively prohibitive... unless i've missed something it was quite expensive, especially as i'd have to pay for myself for entry as well, despite the fact i'd only be there as pit-crew.

@weeksy59: Yeh I thought this was crazy, it's mega money for a flat short enduro race then

Well I hope for your sake that there is an onsite WIFI connection and if not a cash machine. Back in 2018 there was a lack of wifi and no cash machine, so you were buggered if you pay with plastic.

@captainclunkz: Mrs Haro had to give me the vendor wifi to pay with card for a Bob tshirt last year. I literally had to stand out back, right under the mast to get just enough connection for my PayPal to go through! Take cash.

@jake00d: You should go ride the Naughty Northumbrian, that's also on this weekend. It's far more challenging than riding down a field.

The UK's largest Trade/Expo with over 100 trade stands, live entertainment with live bands and DJs, licensed bar,.........

Their being quite clear from the outset its a bike themed festival as opposed to an enduro or 4xr event, if thats your thing I am sure you would be very happy..

@weeksy59 it’s a MTB festival with racing hence everyone entering the site must pay as a festival goers.
There’s obviously plenty of races around the country to enter.

I get that. My lad at the time was racing a GT so it being the GT sponsored event made it massively appealing to enter, plus the fact there's no other DH races on this weekend anywhere else. So it would have been nice to rock up, race, go home. Whilst the event is clearly full in terms of DH entrants, i do feel it's restrictive in a way too as it misses out people who are just wanting to race. However i do completely understand that may not be their target audience and that's cool. Was an observation, not a criticism Smile

@weeksy59: Si has this the right way round really. Imagine booking up for the festival but not being able to race because day trippers had filled it - that would definitely be the wrong way round.

You've still got your 51 other race weekends this year to keep you busy Wink

@mashrv1: yeah we'll be fine Smile I'm glad events like this exist... it's just not something i/we are particularly interested in.... I'm old and unsociable Smile
  • 5 1
@weeksy59: so you've answered your own question then. Don't go to the Malverns because it's not for you. It's supposed to be fun and if you're not interested in the fun parts go somewhere else

@weeksy59: whattt? you have a GT so that makes it massively appealing?

I'll make sure my boss knows he was wasting his time his time playing golf. He should have been racing world cups when they were sponsored by Mercedes

@big-sally: LOL never underestimate the thoughts of a young teen... he liked the fact it was a GT event and he would be on a GT.... he's now got a session so it doesn't matter.. Smile

@jase111171 everyone’s allowed off site if they want to.

 see you there!
