Red Bull Rampage 2014: A Blank Canvas

RED BULL

A BLANK CANVAS

RAMPAGE

A blank canvas, a blank page, a new Rampage site, all are things that can be overwhelming in their vastness. This year athletes have the opportunity to create their own unique lines from top to bottom without influence of years gone by. There are no ghosts of crashes, wins or big tricks here, just brand new, untouched terrain in a more dynamic new landscape. As exciting as the opportunity is, it is also a daunting task to build so much in so little time, perhaps this is why a lot of the riders are teaming up to build lines together. There is strength in numbers and also less politics and chances of line stealing. As outside media was officially allowed on course yesterday, Margus and Sterling were finally able to dig in and get the goods from the new site.

For last five days the builders and athletes have been playing in the worlds biggest sandbox. Today was a good day to take a hike around and see the magic.

Stuntman-of-the-day award goes to German photog Jens Staudt. While climbing a steep pitch trying to get set up for a shot the boulder that he was holding on to let go. Both him and the boulder dropped over 25ft. Lucky for him there just happened to be be a massive mound of sand at his landing. The only injury he got was a sand-blast to his face and camera gear.

Its funny how the rampage is for me what the world cup, super bowl or other major sporting events are for millions of others.... one of the only times I will actually spend my time with a bunch of buddies huddles around a screen to watch a sporting event! Every year I am excited and the community of stoke worldwide for an amazing event is awesome to see.

If you haven't been doing this for the WC, you've been doing it wrong.

He was referring to the soccer/futbol World Cup, not DH...

Can't say how bummed out I am that Bizet can't ride this year...he said last Rampage in two different interviews that he was considering trying a double backflip, and him not getting his second run last year must have deprived us of great things. Next year!

according to the direct line andreu lacondeguy is taking, his run will be 20 seconds long.
  • 8 0
Would still be the craziest 20 seconds of the event.

the sheer rawness of these lines is so stunning. Not to take anything away form how the old site developed over the years, but this fresh start makes it that much more impressive and exciting for me. It should steer this years competition more towards big mountain and big hits and help with judging.

Gosh anybody who looks at their sport and thinks it's hardcore, needs to take a look at Rampage (or MTB in general)... The incredible risk these guys put on their bodies is beyond any other thing I know of on this earth. Hats off to those who do it, and also for putting on one heck of a show for us groms! Big Grin

gotta love watching Guy Martin 6 inches from a stone wall at 100MPH
  • 3 0
 200mph*
  • 2 0
Yes Isle of Man TT is actually worse the Rampage. It's not unusual that a couple of guys die every year.
  • 2 0
The pics are stunning, the tricks those guys do are wicked. Yet, I feel a bit sad that the freeride part is slowly diminishing. All that line preparaions, building kickers, cutting bushes away... Soon it will be just another slopestyle place, I am afraid.

So who was it again that commented how we weren't gonna see any huge tricks over the gopro stepdown? I think Aggy was looking for you.
  • 3 0
That was not the GoPro step-down it was another wooden feature that looks the same (with Red Bull on it) but it is not the step down.
