Sam Pilgrim Tricktionary: Tailwhip

May 25, 2014
by IONbike

Who could explain tricks better than Mr. Sam Pilgrim, official FMB World Tour Champion 2013 / owner of a golden water bottle?

No, seriously, Sam is known to be a super funny dude and his self made "how to" video series has been appreciated by a lot of riders. So ION joined forces with Sam, got the "Dirt Hangar" indoor spot for one week, built a black wall, rented some daylight cinema lights, added two FS700 cameras for higher frame rate, and sessioned for two nights to present you with a state of the art trictionary series. We hope this first one helps you dial in your Tailwhips.

Just went out and tried this but it went badly wrong. In the video he should have said not to try it if you have triple clamp forks.

You should know not to try it if you have triple clamp forks

 Well... that was brief

Catching the pedals without destroying your shins is the hard part...you can pick up the bike rotation pretty quick.

That was weak ... Gotta expect more of the FMB-Champ
No words about :

-Learning the motions on the ground first
-choice of the kicking foot (kicking with the backfoot makes it easier). For kicking with the front foot you have to move your feet back and kick the back of your bike which takes more time and makes it a bit harder to learn.
-getting the second foot on the pedal can be quite hard because it feels like the bike is pushing your catching leg away to far. For me this was more a mental problem, just put more strength into the catching leg and the bike won't move too much anymore.

Etc etc.

Theres so much more to this trick than just staying over the bike (which is very important too!)

the other one he did in his last how to series was way more helpful

I think they did a banged out as many tricks in that one week they could an will show one a month! So six tricks which would be easy to do in a week an film would be six months of how tos an so on. Just my thought of what went down.!!!!

Sorry ION, nothing but fail here!

 That was pretty brief, guvna.

I like the lighting and video quality- and I know money is spent on stuff like this to make the video (and therefore the company behind it) look awesome... BUT.... Sam already does a How To series so in my opinion ION should just make quality riding edits of him rather than trying to re-invent the wheel. This lighting set-up for a normal riding edit could be awesome.

Anybody else experiencing the phenomenon where a brand's marketing overexposure makes you actively hate that brand?

It's certainly happening to me with ION and their constant appearances on these pages, be it for an uninteresting photoshoot, a t-shirt "review" or the drivel above, which is at least designated as sponsored content.

The still image above pretty much says it all, they spend more effort on lighting and focusing on their logo than on the rider in the background, which is the current pinkbike in a nutshell. Yes, there is interesting content on here from time to time, but it seems that the majority of articles here are bought by the industry, sometimes more, sometimes less obvious to the reader.

 I do understand your point, a 100%.
But content like a trictionary or a fantasy contest (Vienna Air King in April), are in our opinion good stuff for all readers.
And on each news Thread, you see where it is coming from, at the very top: by.....

For the still image: It's a screenshot, we had no photographer on site, and we really put a lot of effort into the lightling, and just couldn't do it better. If Sam was wearing white only, he would have had the same result. The highlighting of the logo was not on purpose (we just had to put a light under the launch ramp, otherwise the result for Sams vsisibility would have been worse).

PS:
for the content you named before:
- Uninteresting photoshoot: if you mean the 2014 bike apparel overview? We still think it is better than other posts about other brands that just show studio shots of the products.
- The drirelease tee review: It's a tech tee, and discussion was done on already in this thread.

To be very honest: it just sucks putting a lot of effort, time & enegry in a project with a very very restricted budget like this video series (even if it might not look like it) and all you get is hate.

Maybe "hate" was a little too strong, and I'm pretty sure I'm not your target demographic, so don't fret. More than anything, I was just surprised by my own reaction to your brand, which went from "neutral" to "dislike, would not bang" pretty quickly without me actively thinking about it. It's like that girl at a club with too much cleavage constantly shoving her boobs in your face - she loses her appeal pretty quickly and you lose your respect for her.

"To be very honest: it just sucks putting a lot of effort, time & enegry in a project with a very very restricted budget like this video series (even if it might not look like it) and all you get is hate."

To be very honest, I'm pretty sure these things aren't done for shits and giggles or out of altruistic motives - which is totally fine - but maybe there is a saturation point for content marketing like this after which more brand exposure actually has adverse effects (but this is probably just my grumpy self).

Ultimately ION decided to give the rider a job to do an advertisement that involved teaching the viewer tricks. Is it really so bad for them to want their brand to have exposure within these advertisements? Honestly, what's so bad about marketing? Just keep your negative opinion to yourself if you don't like something lol. Judger.

Thanks ION, I'm not even a dirt jumper but enjoyed the shots anyway!

I agree with Banjberra. There's not much money to be made in this industry, so if companies like ION hire riders for stuff like this, it's something great for our professional riders, and therefore also for our whole scene.

Without the sponsor then the video doesn't get made in the first place Mr Ridingrocks.
  • 8 3
Hard to believe that took one week

Building the wall made of 180 square meters black molton fabric: 2,5 days, getting the light fine tuned & camera setting / angles check: 1 day, shooting: 2 nights, to be precise.
For two set ups: one for the double, one for the quarter.

Well, dont I feel like an a*shole?
  • 6 0
I feel like a lot more time and effort went into making it look "cool" with the black fabric and the lighting than actually making quality content. Nothing against Sam, because I've even seen other how to vids by him in the past, but I really feel like this was not useful for someone actually wanting to learn this trick.
  • 5 0
It seems like all the effort went into production, and the content was overlooked. You have to admit ION that was a pretty weak explanation.
  • 10 0
Yes, we have to admit that. We asked Sam to make it short & crisp, focus on the most important stuff, because we wanted to make quite short edits, nothing that gets you bored. Now, after the reactions here, it is clear that this was not a good intension at all.

For the upcoming webisodes we will try to improove. Let's see, if we can stick to the explanations from Sam that we shot on site, or maybe get some extra soundbits and details from him afterwards, to be able to go more into detail.

Thanks for the input!

I would say that you don't need to worry about it being boring, because if you're having trouble with a hard trick you're going to want all the help you can get.
  • 2 0
It's helpful to the beginner. The looking down at the pedals tip was something I didn't know. Obviously it's not a complete lesson but it is short and sweet. Definitely good. Haters gonna hate lol. People are kinda entitled, you give them something for free and they ask for more. Thanks for making a helpful ad rather than a video of a slow motion pro rider and badass music.

Very professional way to handle the Pinkbike ranting. Big props for that IONbike! Beer

Also good pointers in there. The kick bike away into a helicopter is my main an big mistake with this trick I have so im gonna try an keep it under me.
  • 3 3
Not sure why all the hate, its quick, simple and to the point. I think its pretty cool that a brand got behind a how-to-clip, but if you guys think you are going to learn a tail whip off a 1 minute or 10 minute how to clip you are living in La-La land, if you really want to learn to tail whip get off the computer, head to your local jumps and start practicing them, its the only real way to learn a tail whip and yes you will crash and scar-up your chins as this part of learning tricks on a bike,..my 5 cents

Instructions too complicated, my dick is stuck in my spokes
