Self Edit Comp - The Results

Jan 11, 2010
by John Lee
Firstly a massive thanks to all the entries and to those of you who were bogged under in snow but still went out and still submitting entries for the competition. It was a lot of fun watching all the entries from around the world and I really enjoyed the variety and quality of riding they showed.

Here are the results - after shed loads of entries over December, here are the 3 winners! Chosen by Aaron LaRocque and myself earlier this week.(Feedback from Aaron LaRocque on each film)

First Place wins a pair of Geax Tyres:

I love the effort that went into this. To self shoot with a cable cam is unreal. Serious props on that. Everything about this was really cool. Creative and varied angles, good composition, all in all I loved it.

Second Place wins some RNR Goggles:

Getting out in the snow to shoot is rad. Karl's edits always have the sickest energy to them and get me stoked every time. It's rad to see how hard he shreds in front of the lens too. He proves that filmers can ride too.

Third Place - wins a Pinkbike.com shirt:

Was really stoked on this. Good riding, good composition and loved the animated panning and tilting effect.

There we have it - The results are in and the article is finished! Congrats to the winners and a huge thanks to all of the Pinkbikers who went out and worked hard! Keep your eyes peeled as we are planning to do many more of this style of comps in the future on Pinkbike. I'm going to end with this video with my vote for; Most entertaining entry - wins some laughter. Quality, fun edit!

Epic downhill sled. All maple construction, flex beam suspension, polished rails, and a fat 105 degree front tube bend to top it off. sick rig man, props.

all where awsome, i dunno how you guys chose the 1st and 2nd place they where both 1st place worthy!
  • 5 1
i prefered the second video i think that should have one and the third should have been seconf and first should have been third, lol at the extreme sledding, i wish i had a sled . . .

also i think i would have had the goggles over the tyres :-)

I think the first video took it because of the effort of the self cable cam. You see the guy set it up, then let it go from holding a rope and have it film him. The second and especially third one had nice footage in it, but the cable cam is just so cool. Nice work every one.

I think karlheldt should have taken the win! All sick though! Good job guys!

I agree with you on that one!
  • 5 1
i think you have to take into consideration the homemade cable cam section - that was just so original and inventive!
  • 3 4
Yeah he did a fantastic job but I prefered Karlheldt's edit Big Grin .
  • 3 5

i think karls was a really great edit but it seemed like there was a lot more effort put into the winners entry. i really liked them both.

I think TobyGoodger's video definitely deserved to win, well done everyone.

agree, much better film. the guy looked like he put loads more effort into it and it felt like it went on much longer than the 1:12. great effort, great editing and a well deserved win!!
  • 2 0
Well... Blimey! Cant believe I got a mention but wasnt even riding a bike!! suppose that's the point. Can I call that fourth place?

Well done to everyone and to my brother TobyGoogder in 1st place!

All good vids guys, well done! I totally agree with first place. It wasn't super polished or thebest quality, but he used some great angles and the cable cam was inspired. Top job!

Is last video self filmed? The camera was little bit shaking and moving while recording, but yeah, funny defntly...
  • 1 0
in certain editing software i think you can add that effect
  • 2 1
third should have been first. first, cable cam was a great idea, but other then that the edit was blah. 2nd was cool. liked the snow. thats my opinions. i didnt think much of first place though.

Hey Pinkbike... How about a "self everything" contest. Entrants have to film, ride, edit and compose the music themselves.
  • 1 0
really cool idea - ill have a think about it - im just worried of already that some of the entries would be painful to hear!
  • 1 1
Haha, Just lay down a funky bass line over a disco beat and your set!

Ahhh, but that's the whole point. Some would be awful, yes, but it would showcase the multi-talented among us. It would show who can bring the whole package to the table instead of using copyrighted material or "bought" music...

Yea I was thinking of making my own backing music just with soundtrack pro (I cant play any instruments) but I ran out of time. However I almost always use fully licensed music for my videos, there is so many creative talented musicians out there that license their music through creative commons. I think it's a cop out to use popular music sometimes, especially when it's from a big budget MTB DVD sigh...

the winner should get vod cos all the work that went into it
