Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship (SBTS) brings back their three race series, the
Lost Sierra Triple Crown, promising memorable times and painful bliss to boot. Triple Crown contestants will compete in all three of the SBTS races – the Lost and Found 100-mile gravel grinder, the Downieville Classic 29-mile cross country race and Grinduro, a 65-miler mashing up a gravel grinder and an enduro. And all
race festival proceeds go directly to trail maintenance and building in the
Lost Sierra by SBTS’ volunteer driven non-profit.
The
Lost and Found starts the series off on June 3rd in Lake Davis, Calif. with a 100-mile gravel grinder. It’s the perfect blend of pavement, dirt road, gravel road, and historic railroad grade with 7,000 feet of elevation gain and 80 percent dirt. This race doubled in size last year and was named one of the
toughest gravel grinders out West. This year riders will experience an all new course, plenty of high alpine scenery, bigger and better aid stations, a gourmet catered post ride meal, and plenty of icy cold libations from the
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. Registration is NOW OPEN for this event.
Next is the
Downieville Classic 29-mile cross country race on August 5th. An
internationally acclaimed mountain bike festival, this race completely sold out last year. The ride starts by ascending 3,000 feet in eight miles to the Sierra Nevada crest. From there, riders glide along colorful trail sections, including the infamous Baby Heads, flying through refreshing creek crossings, dodging rocks and fellow riders, and traveling at warp speeds down Third Divide. Depending on snow melt and SBTS’
volunteers and the US Forest Service crew’s ability to open the new Gold Valley Rim Trail, there may be brand new singletrack for this year’s race. And at the finish waiting for racers is the world famous river jump and a downtown Downieville street festival with live music into the night. Registration is now open for this event.
Finally,
Grinduro on October 7th completes the Lost Sierra Triple Crown series in the scenic hills of Quincy, Calif. With journalists commenting, “Grinduro will
save bike racing” you may want to check out this event. With 8,000 feet of climbing in 65 miles, the course is a serious affair but not meant to be a sufferfest. Timed segments are only 5-7 minutes in length over pavement, gravel roads and a twisty singletrack descent back into town. When riders arrive in town, they will be greeted with a celebration of live music, artwork, handcrafted bike displays and delicious gourmet food. Also another sold out event in 2016, it is anticipated that this event will sellout within hours of registration opening. Registration OPENS SUNDAY APRIL 23 at 8:00pm Pacific.
“We believe the Triple Crown is the ultimate test of a true backcountry rider, because if you’ve ever ridden the Lost Sierra or done one of our events, you know that there’s no hiding,” stated Greg Williams, Executive Director SBTS. “You have to be super fit and extremely skilled to prevail in all categories – that includes racing, spectating and partying.”
The Lost Sierra Triple Crown will be based on the same points system used in the Downieville Classic All-Mountain World Championships. Points will be applied to placing based on the three aforementioned events across 13 racer categories. A different bike can be used for each of the Lost Sierra Triple Crown races.
