Video: A Kiwi e-MTB Story Eddie Masters, Brook MacDonald & Matt Walker

Like most things these days this story starts with a phone call. Cue Toby Shingleton; the man with the plan. Three mates, battery-powered bicycles, and one hell of a riding destination, I was in from the get-go.

There’s nothing like getting the band back together, so fast forward a few months, and Brook MacDonald, Matt Walker and I found ourselves in Nelson, NZ tasked with putting the new Shimano EP8 motor through its paces. I hadn’t really spent a significant amount of time on an e-bike prior to this trip and neither had the others so we were blank canvases with full batteries.

Nelson as a riding destination has it all. Big hills, big climbs, and equally as large descents; a mountain biker's dream. I’ll forever hold Nelson close to my heart as the location where I lost my e-bike virginity and fell in love with this new style of self-assisted shuttling. Yes, that’s right shuttling. In our 3 days, we explored every nook and cranny of this 2 wheeled paradise enjoying the ups almost as much as the downs. Conversation flowed on the climbs and the banter in the peloton reached a new level. 3 days in nelson normally would barely scratch the surface, but in our 3 days, we hit all the hotspots and even entered some unchartered territory.

Our collective conclusion after 3 epic days in the saddle; don’t believe anyone who tells you they don’t like e-bikes. E-bikes unlock rides that were previously only earmarked for aerobic fitness freaks of nature. They open up a world of opportunities for everyone from pro’s to first-timers. Mountain biking is about having fun and sharing the stoke and that’s what I found these bikes did best. Try and wipe the smile off your face, I dare ya!

When some of the worlds best say there having a blast on ebikes. Q the downvotes.
The only haters are the ones that haven’t been out on them enough.

These guys are getting paid to do so

nah. Some of us haters think they're enjoyable to ride but don't like them for other reasons. See the story about the Trek study that found them to be "significantly" worse for the environment than a non-e bike, for example.

I ride my Levo SL since 2020, sold my classic bike for it and never missed it since. E-Bikes are so much fun! But the voice over! Wonder if it is sarcasm because the Masters Brothers have some kind of special humour? If it’s ment the way it‘s done, it‘s cringe worthy.

@stflood: They get paid to ride normal bikes too, I assume they hate them as well?

@blackercanyons: the do gooders would say a paper plane is bad for the environment.

@stflood: Umm, getting paid to throw whips with smiles on their faces tells the true story. ya just don't wanna believe how fun they are.

Such a bunch of rad riders. The better rider, the more you'll enjoy emtb.

 Great pics by Sven.

Haters hate. But Ebikes are awesome! With a spare battery I can easily do 10k’ days, everyday of vacation. Up/down no shuttles. Only morons who can’t shred rag on them.

Only thing wrong with E-bikes is when they go wrong?
Then it is like riding up hill on an old DH bike or walking!

Nothing against this clip but I'm not sure about the location of that power button.

Glad someone else noticed that too. I'll give it a month of average riding before it's caked full of shit and starts failing.

 Totally electrifying rad ●

I love me some eBs, but gotta be honest I was looking for some Ed Masters / Matt Walker hijinks....

I agree. It looks a little forced and seems like it's their first time riding ebikes. Would have been cooler just watching them ride without the multiple Shimano plugs.

God those ebikes are ugly! I get that these guys need to occasionally make a cringe worthy ebike video to keep their sponsorship checks rolling in but it's made worse by how fugly and large their ebikes look. Hey Mondraker... Redalp is smiling at YOU right now with approval. He also just winked at you Pivot.

I assume my down voters must love the looks of these bikes. I guess there is a market for E-Redalps.

Those downtubes are huge. Is the q factor different on ebikes?

 @rcrocha:
The battery shape and size is the main reason for the ugliness but some newer ebikes like the Orbea Rise hides the battery much better: www.orbea.com/id-en/ebikes/montana/rise

I'm not looking at the bike much when i'm riding. But after at the Starbucks I look like a real pratt.

The Pivot Shuttle is a 4 year old design, which is ancient by MTB standards, much less eMTB. I'm sure it still rides great, but it's not exactly an accurate representative of modern eMTB design.

@withdignityifnotalacrity: That makes sense. It doesn't look like it's been re-tooled in while. That down tube is enormous! store.pivotcycles.com/en/bike-shuttle-us-v2

@dirtdiggler: Not sure you can compare Orbea RS Internal Battery 360Wh and Pivot Internal Battery 725Wh

I have nothing against ebikes, they are great in some applications as well as standard bikes. But this add looks so fake and cringe almostike washing powder commercials, where a housewife with great excitement (near climax) states that her laundry is already snow-white after just one wash!
How many times can you repeat "shimano" in a 2-minute video? I think there are subtler ways to reach this target audience than forcing professional athletes to shoot embarrassing commercials.
