You may not know Pete Matthews, but chances are you've ridden his trails. As a member of the Whistler Bike Park trail crew, Pete knows his way around a shovel and a bike and earlier this winter he joined us for a lap down a Squamish classic, Half Nelson.
Rode Half Nelson last August and it is easily one of the best trails anywhere on planet earth. Awesome berms, creek passes and jumps. Absolutely amazing trail
It's a blast and the fun factor is high and it will always be rated highly because it appeals to the masses but "best trails anywhere on the planet" might be a stretch. I can think of several others in Squamish I'd prefer to ride on a regular basis. Cakewalk, Rupert, Room with a View and even Angry Midget. That's not even mentioning Lord of the Squirrels and the backcountry stuff over in Whistler.
100% agree. We (my wife and I) rode it for the first time 2 years ago, we then went back to BC last summer, rode it a few more times.
it is a classic, i also think it's the best trail that i've ever ridden anywhere. I didn't think anything could top Dr Park in Crested Butte, but I was wrong.
it just sucks that all of the amazing trails in Squamish, Whistler, and the North Shore are 2400 km from my house....
@k2rider1964: Each to their own, eh? It's not my cup of tea but I'm glad we don't all like the same trails. They'd be even more crowded than they already are!
Gees man...I didn´t realize Pinkbike became Facebook overnight. You are all right, Half Nelson is a piece of sh@t trail. Don't go there, is not worth it.
@scott-townes: yeah, i'm a tourist, but i rode quite a few of the trails in squamish, whistler, the north shore, rossland, revelstoke, nelson, and kelowna.
i've also ridden most of the great trails in colorado, tons in utah, some in new mexico, sedona, also, in iceland, and new zealand.... (need to go mtb in the alps & pyrenees... as i've only done road bikes there)
but Half Nelson is still the "best trail on the planet" if i had to choose a single one.
and as others have stated, it's cool if we all like different trails. your "best trail on the planet" doesn't have to be mine, and vice versa.
To be fair, Half Nelson is rated as the second best trail in the world behind Bobsled, by Pinkbikers using Trailforks. Then again, the number one spot goes to Bobsled with Expresso in third which tends to suggest the kind of trails and riders most people like these days. I miss the real North Shore, like the old Expresso, before it became Mocha Cappuccino.
@adamkovics: "Its only an opinion about a trail, it doesn't matter... oh here's my entire MTB resume to defend my position to retaliate against a comment that wasn't directed at me."
@k2rider1964: i guess it all depends on what one thinks of as "best" and i agree with you, the trails you list are all great.... don't forget Meadow of the Grizzly though....
but let's say you're a squamish local, and you have friends visiting for their first time, and they have one day, you're taking them down half nelson, right? i know i would.... (sure, we'd ride others as well)
I had it on my radar for my next trip to BC, every time I've been I just go to whistler as I don't know anywhere else to go and don't have anyone to take me plus usually I just hire a bike at Whistler so can't really take it anywhere else. But I've been watching a lot of BCPov's vids lately and one of my favourites is his Half Nelson vid, it looks awesome! I'm just gonna take my own bike next time I go too so I can go wherever I want whenever I want. Also bike hire at whistler costs a bloody fortune!
@shirk-007: I heard he's been riding his road bike on a trainer in preparation for the new e-bike category the NSMBA is unveiling at the Fivers this year.
We heard he's scared. Worried that second place in the overall was never going to be achievable again. Afraid that second was as good as it was ever going to get.
He's been training hard this year - we'll see if he makes a comeback. #dontcallitacomeback
