Ok im going to guess that at one time there was a very wide road that led up to the top of the mountain. This would be a retaining wall to stop debris from blocking the road. Wheres the road? Hundreds of years of monsoons may have washed it away.
Nothing but ghost left to tell the story now.

Thats a good assumption! In front of this wall is a river, so the river could have been the road washed out. On the other side the land is flat and in steps of perfectly flat land as if it was used for farming or a house. But this is high up a good hour of hiking in the mountain. This mountains has these walls all over up and down so I think there use to be a community here hundreds of years ago!

I have no idea. Thats what is so cool! The temples here are easily 200-500 years old if not much older. So, this was just a wall in the mountains. I can find these walls in all the mountains I ride. Thousands of rocks piled up to make a beautiful wall. Its humbling!

A testament to the early landscapers and pathfinders!

It always amazing me, new hill I have never been to always have new treasures to find. It think there is a lot of lost history here in Japan as most people look at them and wonder but never have any idea or true history to the origin or purpose for that matter!

To explore and find such treasures is awesome! We are not the first to traverse these ranges..here too. If not aboriginal people, than for sure animals of many types have hopped, run or slithered this terrain a thousand times and years before. I am but one of the many and varied users of these trails.

I love the feeling of deep history. It just sends my brain into fun realms of pondering!

Its very fun! This was out of sight, I had my camera on zoom to get it as I was across the river! This is one spot but the wall is long, I wanted to zoom in to see the how they puzzled the rocks!
