Seb Kemp rides his bike on trails near Blue Mountain in Jamaica at the Jamaica Fat Tyre Festival. This was part of the memorial ride for trail builder Ken Klowak who was killed last year in Mexico.
The thing that most people aren't understanding here is the background work to make this image.Yes, the image is fairly basic. However Ian has an incredible ability to match flash with natural light. First off, shutter speed of 1/500 and using flash. The use of flash here really helps pull detail out of the image and makes the colors pop. Not to mention that it helps ensure the action is frozen. High shutter sync is something I want to learn more about. And if I know Ian, the rider ripped right out of this turn, and that is why Ian and the rider are both pro. Nice work fellas!
Honestly there is so many awesome shots out there , that deserve POD but it always gets chosen because a well known photographer has made it, somewhat the same thing with VOD
Sort of, we also feature any great photo from any photographer we happen to see. The fact that someone is well know doesn't have anything to do with it. To be truthful it actually has the opposite effect, I try to use fewer photos from pros and well known photographers, but we still need to have great photos, so they do get used.
semenuk-fan, surely the reason that pro photographers are pro, as Ian hinted at, is because they can take more than one POD-worthy picture, hence why they are awarded with more than one POD.
Well deserved POD Ian,i've been bang into following the fat tyre fest in Jamaica since DHP went with all the Chain Reaction crew and cast.It amazes me when you see the enthusiasm and skill of the local kids given half the chance, and blokes in sandals competing on walmart specials, with classic toe clips, blowing cutting edge tech out of the window.Great pic m8.
You have to admit though, there's something about these shots that’s sort of mesmerizing... it’s like a campfire, you can’t help but stare at it.
Well that particular shot is insane considering there is barely any berm to hold him in that position. Yes, there are many berm shots but I prefere the typical sick berm shot over the typical "something tuck no hander"... but that's just me.
But if you have a better idea, feel free to make a picture of it and post it here.
I'm not trying to take away from the skill involved in the shot. Props to the rider.
This also isn't about me 'making' a better picture. I just would have chosen a different one.
My criticism is for the selector of the photo. Not the photographer or rider
I agree, okay my shots my not be the best, but it's so hard to get the views on them, whereas well known photgrpahers can get thousands in an hour or so
Really if you want to get views you need to have friends on Pinkbike. It's social media, and you only have 21 friends, so when you post a photo only 21 people see it on their dash. Many of our 'better' photographers have several hundred if not a thousand or more friends. For example every time I post a photo it shows up on the dash of over 2000 people. The views don't come because I'm a well know photographer, but because I have added a lot of friends. Granted a lot of those friends are because of who I am, but I think you can see the point. Friends = Views
Saw the video to this, he takes every turn this low berm or no-berm. Sick skills. No pads - only a half hat and flowing that AM bike like nobodys business.
yeah, got to say.. see a couple.. and that's good enough for me. Sure the rider has got skill, but I can't say there's anything special about the picture that calls me to want to go out and ride.
