However, I am strictly against judging someone just by their place of birth(even if we are talking about general attitude), without considering other factors. I would not link you, or any of your ancestors to any atrocities that happened in Europe in the middle of 20th century, and wish no one did it.
That being said, it all works only "unless proven otherwise". If Ivan turns out to be pro-war, I can not support him being promoted anywhere in any way.

If he was a member of some government-funded Olympic team, or sponsored by Rosneft/Lukoil/Roskosmos/whatever then I get the hate. In his particular case, how is his place of residence relevant?
