In theory, when the upper chain slaps down, the device allows the chainring to rotate and thus pulling on the lower chain, engaging the derailleur damper. Additionally both upper and lower portions of the chain usually are subject to the same acceleration from impacts, so large portions of the force can cancel each other out without interfering with the crank when the chainring rotates freely.

This exactly. Love my Arma performance-wise, yet I just ordered a Mara as a replacement for this very reason. Making a shock that's easily home-serviceable like RS? Call me in, otherwise I'll stay clear of the company. It's 2026, it's not that hard. My experience with their service is also a bit 'italian'. Swapped springs for other rates, one time got wrong stroke, another time one spring too many. Service times were ok though.

@beaterdit: Extra gear or extra range? On my Enduro I'm riding 10-48T 1x11 X0, on other bike GX Eagle, having also ridden X0 Eagle before. Would never upgrade the Enduro to 1x12 unless wear-resistant cassette coatings would be a must.

@schihim: It's not about hiding, but perseverance and collective organization. There are far more diggers here than forest officials. If they cut trees into a trail it's cut free the next day. They cut 30 it's one week. At some point they don't have any trees left they are willing to sacrifice. If they destroy a trail 2 new ones are built. "we are more" works.

@shredddr: This, in the steeps it's pretty irrelevant to me, but loading the front wheel sufficiently in flat sections in general is so straining compared to bikes with 'proper' fctrc ratio.

@KJP1230: Spot on. Apart from manuals and tricks I have yet to be convinced that there's actual benefit in short stays. They aren't more agile in any way or better at cornering, constant wheelbase provided, yet often making bikes with modern reach so tiring to ride to get sufficient front wheel load. And tbh if your tech is right you can also manny a high pivot DH with 470mm stays at sag.
