Review: Commencal Meta Power SX Avinox
@BenPea: yes im talking semantics. I would define mountain biking as the act of riding a mountain bike. I do not think an e bike is a mountainbike therefore e biking is not mountain biking. Riding a mountain scooter also feels remarkably similar to riding a mountain bike on the downhill but that isn't mountainbiking either. Also get real, the reason you ride an e bike is not because its the same on the downhill its because its different on the uphill. Ignoring that difference is being intentionally obtuse.

Review: Commencal Meta Power SX Avinox
@BenPea: I thought we were talking about objective differences in equipment not subjective differences in ride feel. The conclusion that a motorbike is the same as a mountain bike is the logical extreme of your own argument. You have failed to define any objective differences between the two because you are so insistent on calling an e bike a mountain bike. Components and geo is a weak argument as historically moto components have been used on mtbs (mostly in the way of forks, look at some early Brooklyn machine works bikes) and mtb geo varies so widely that it isnt a defining trait of the equipment. Saying they feel different to ride is purely subjective which is fine but opposes your original premise. I actually dont think e bikes are motorbikes. The objective difference being one is a pedal assisted vehicle and the other is a motor vehicle. Just as the objective difference between an e bike and a mountainbike is the presence of a motor. Personally I dont have a problem with e bikes. I use them frequently at my job to build and maintain trails aswell as for accessing remote areas. I also think that theyre great for people with mobility challenges or for people who just dont like climbing. I dont oppose e bikes I just think its practical and sensible to distinguish them from mountain bikes.

Review: Commencal Meta Power SX Avinox
@BenPea: What counts as as an "actual difference" if not the presence of an component that otherwise would not be present? If I put a ktm 350 in neutral and ride it down a hill am I mountain biking now? The motor isn't doing anything its just dead weight. My question for you is if we expand past your narrow and contrived example, where do we find the limit of what a mountain bike is? Does the motor have to be electric, why not gas? Is there a limit on power that defines an e bike vs a motorbike? How would you define that objectively?

@BenPea: The difference is the presence of the motor. On a dh bike there is no motor present when the bike is being ridden. The motor remains in the vehicle or at the lift and not on the bike. Your argument boils down to "if we ignore the primary difference between these two things theyre basicaly the same". I wouldn't consider that to be a good faith argument.

First Ride: OneUp Launches $599 Aluminum Wheelset
@fred-frod: Oneup is releasing a wheelset using a hub from their own catalog that is offered with ms hg and xd freehub bodies. This is 100% an issue of oneup not wanting to stock more skus and instead passing that expense along to the consumer. It has nothing to do with a poor product release from 8 years ago.

First Ride: OneUp Launches $599 Aluminum Wheelset
Is nobody else frustrated with wheelsets only being offered with xd freehub bodies? I feel like I shouldn't be expected to spend an extra $100 and 15 minutes of my time to swap a freehub body just because I dont run a sram drivetrain.

First Look: The Mondraker Anark is a Dual-Link Aluminum Freeride Bike
This bike has shorter chainstays than a 2006 kona stinky. It has the same length chainstays as a 2011 norco aline. Are those not freeride bikes?
