Weston Lukens Joins Frameworks with Custom 26" Bike
@chriskneeland: Schwalbe's stuff (no radials yet but otherwise just about everything's there), Kryptotals (in enduro casings) fr/re. FR560 rims (I still ride FR570). Modern inserts are difficult, was thinking about cutting something to size and using zipties.
Shocks for old bikes - got an EXT Storia v3 on a 2008 spesh pitch. Ohlins was also available. Can't really fault the way things are. Can still find good old shocks - a, say, push'd RP23 with a vorsprung air can ought to stand up very well to the newest crop of stuff. KS has a 175mm dropper with external routing (also PNW Cascade/etc). And now the end boss - 26'' straight steerer fork with a good air spring - good luck. Can always mod a newer fork with a straight steerer but that'll be a mullet now.

Video: Do You Really Need DH Casing Tires?
Oppositely (time-wise), used to ride exclusively with DH casing magic maries, pretty much forgot that I had to change sealant or what flat tires meant or that tires would deflate over time through the carcass or anything along the lines - at the cost of said tires weighting quite a ridiculous amount (the FR570s with 2.0/1.8 spokes didn't help ofc).
Then I got another bike for XCMs, carbon wheels, flimsy tires, inserts and... you can guess it. I also put "super trail" magic maries on my old bike for a change and punctured the thread on the 2nd ride on my local, relatively mellow (with a few rocky sections) trails. That said, I rode the XCM bike quite a few times on the same trails and have never managed to scrap the tires, so I guess inserts do very much matter.
DH casings rule.

@justanotherusername: With the exception of the seat height, dropper travel and the chainring on this one, I think so, yes. Could use a wider handlebar, but the "stem" part itself (-15deg, 90mm-ish if I had to guess) looks practically the same as what comes stock on most XC bikes. "Pro" setups are usually way more slammed.

@justanotherusername: Try them out. Just add inserts, since lightweight carbon wheelsets don't fare all too well under "normal" (ab)use. The tires are completely fine for the capabilities of the bike - if anything, they make you pick better lines, and they grip way more than you'd think - I run a mezcal/peyote combo, coming from barzo/mezcal and it keeps surprising me. Add a big dropper and you've got yourself a "mini" trail bike. Makes the not-so-gnarly stuff way more fun, plus having a bike in the "no excuses for not going faster on the power sections" category, which absolutely does include the chisel with deore gears and alu wheelset, is quite the blast. Kinda like ebikes, but in reverse - naturally less effort to go up, everything becomes more interesting to ride, prices are sane.

Whatever properly means. Just ride what you like and how you like it. From a certain xc reddit - "don't buy upgrades, ride up grades"... or down trails... Add rowing and/or calisthenics and/or swimming for general fitness and you'll be on your way. Practice makes perfect. Now, if you're chasing pro-level results, or actually results at all, that's another story. Learn to love the process (no pun intended :D )

Pinkbike Poll: What Cost More, Your Car or Your Bike?
'03 Corolla hatch w/ a '24 Oiz m-pro, only need to take off the front wheel to make it fit and IDGAF if I've been riding through a mudstorm. It's the ultimate vehicle. Daily is a gs450h but that's a... p***ymobile in comparison - unless there's a race "really far away" (5h+ drive), then I disassemble the oiz, put it in the trunk and deal with the PoS headset cable tourism later.
@Austink: accelerates up the steepest slope on the highway over here at 150kph in 5th (1.6l 3zz-fe manual). They ain't that bad, just don't skimp on oil. Mine's even a pre-"fixed pistons" model, 4-5k rpm on the highway, doesn't go from high to low on the dipstick inbetween 10k km intervals. That's with amsoil ss 10w30 but anything modern, decent and not stretched out should be just fine.
