Hey Charlie, I love my copy of your book. I got it when you and Joe visited Swanage. It was cool to jam guitar and share whisky around the camp fire.

if the freewheel is brand new it could be it just needs to run in for a while and then it would be ok. The pawls have got to rub on something so there will always be a tiny bit of drag. when I got my Myst Pro the drag on the free hub was huge but after about 5 days out its fine.
Sounds like the brake issue could be related to wheel adaptors or spacers. If the hubs are convertible to different formats by changing the ends, just check the aren't reversed (left and right might be different widths) and that they are seated correctly.
If all else fails, pop to your LBS.
