@gnarnaimo: ahh... A "smart" person who can't conceive of another way of doing things.
It is not impossible to design a derailleur that doesn't hang down. It's been done before. Here's an example:

With cassettes being so huge these days, it does seem like the old design for derailleurs has some pretty significant drawbacks.

Umm.. is there a reason that derailleurs hang down? Could we not put them above the cassette in a much more protected spot?

@Arierep: woops, double post. A theoretical fluid filled helmet with a carbon fiber shell could have discrete nodes instead of a more full coverage. That would provide thickness without weight. It would also allow for dissipation of rotational forces. So, for example, 6 grape sized contact points between the head and the helmet.

@Arierep: but that has to do with how much foam needs to be there so it can crush just so much. Perhaps with the right shell, a fluid filled liner designed to fail in a certain way, maybe through a valve, could be much thinner.

I'm going to double down and say that a helmet at this price should not be disposable. There is no reason why a fluid filled liner with a burst valve could not provide the same amount of protection as collapsible foam. Add to this a carbon fiber shell to direct the energy of an impact around the head.

How about a carbon fiber shell that can be reused after a crash with a cheap foam (or fluid) liner that has to be replaced.
