@tempo: not at all. I have a dog. And indeed he comes on bike rides with me. He gets the most ridiculous amount of love and attention. We have full pet insurance because we want to take care of him. However he is an animal, just as we are. As such I need time in the outdoors to reconnect to nature and get my physical exercise. And so does he. What he certainly does not need is some idiot owner not giving their dog the required exercise because they’re worried about vet bills. If you don’t want the responsibility, don’t own a dog!

So many plonkers commenting on here, it’s unbelievable. Just a few facts. The Iditarod race covers 1000 miles in a 1-2 week period. A greyhound can run 40+ mph A border collie will chase sheep over the fells (English hills/mountains) all day long. No problem Yes, I would never take a chihuahua on a bike ride. But I would never own one either. Dogs are meant to run. They’re are basically tame wolves. Who run and run and... you guessed it run. And guess what, not on tarmac. They are animals, they are meant to be in the outdoors, that’s why they have fur! And thick pads on the bottom of their feet! Do you watch wildlife documentaries thinking, oh that poor artic fox I bet it’s cold. Oh that poor jackel it actually has to feed itself, oh that poor African wild dog, it has to run after its food for miles and miles. What would be worse is to never let your dog do what it’s supposed to do! Run!!!
