There's always been heaps of spinal/neck/back injuries. I think we're just getting unprecedented access to the blow by blow accounts of riders injuries, so it feels like it's a more common occurrence. Man, I do hope Fabian recovers. He is true statesman of our sport

I watched Paul Bas's crash too, that ended my enthusiasm for the event. Compounded by the absolutely moronic way its judged and produced - making the injuries basically in vain. I agree with everything else you've said too.

Spot on. I recently broke my neck (and a long list of broken bones from 20years in the sport), and I had similar comments - "could've been so much worse", "wow you're lucky", "when can you start racing again?". The reality was I had 4 broken vertebrae and months off the bike. I wasn't "lucky", I was seriously injured.
