Yeah I like to force myself to get out in a downpour once in a while just to break the inertia of avoiding the wet. Once I am under the tree canopy I can usually pack my jacket away as the waterproof jackets get really, really hot while pedaling. I put it back on for the downhill or if I am going to do a significant portion of the climb in the open. My setup didn't cost $900, more like $500. There are days where it feels silly and days where it feels completely worth it. Honestly my waterproof shoes are much easier to justify than the jacket or pants.
