THE BUILDERS OF RAMPAGE

bigquotesThe builders are who make Rampage happen for all these athletes. I would not be here right now without them. - Kyle Norbraten

Hiking up the Red Bull Rampage site is a feat in itself, the cliffs are steeps and the steeps are cliffs. The footings are loose and it's easy to become solely focused on a sense of self preservation, but when you stop to catch your breath and look around, things come into perspective quickly. You start to see the tiny figures in the distance, dwarfed by the sheer size of the cliffs and camouflaged by the layers of dust they have become covered with as they try to mould the landscape. The silhouettes of pickaxe swinging workers that line the ridges against the hot sun are reminiscent of chain gangs, but with one major difference, these people have volunteered for these hours of manual labour. Friends, teammates, parents, siblings and girlfriends all have arrived here to selflessly work towards a singular goal, to help these riders entertain the world and derive some glory from the barren earth.

Brad has been hacking away at Aggy s line all week. Carefully crouched on the edge of his entrance with a pick axe scraping away the rocks.

Awesome photo-set! To me, this is what makes Rampage so cool. In order to win it, a rider has to look at a big-ass mountain and figure out where a line could be, then trick a couple of their friends into helping them build it. Some of the stuff those men and women build in a couple days is amazing, and none of the rad riding could happen without them.

Exactly, there's not just one set line. The riders get the whole mountain to express their style and creativity within their personal line

I helped Gee one year dig and build some lines. Now I've done some digging over 25 years and created some exciting fresh lines at race tracks. Though I can honestly say nothing prepares you for digging at Rampage. The athlete has the vision and you sculpture the land as he sees fit. The work was unpaid, long hours and extreme heat. The satisfaction and reward from seeing Gee stomp the lines we grafted on was true pay back and a huge satisfaction that is one of my greatest memories in Mountainbiking. Next year Pinkbike, you need to start a recruitment blog for people to apply to!

Why isn't gee riding this year? Is he injured or is it just self preservation?

I like it because it puts the builder in the spotlight as well as the rider. too many times the hard work of a lot of people are overlooked by everyone looking at the picture of the guy riding. whether its single track, slope, trails, dirt jumps, somebody put in the hours to make it happen. nice piece PB
