Industry Veteran Hans Rey Calls for Clearer E-Bike Definitions in Open Letter to the Bicycle Industry
@mikekazimer: All ebikes technically have a "throttle", a means of powering the motor without pedalling. Traditional motor bikes use a twist motion to pull a cable, atv's use a thumb trigger, e motos use a twist to control electric output. E-mtbs use a button. By the definitions listed in Ray's letter, all bosch, shimano, dji, brose etc bikes out now would be classes as be classed as e-mopeds. I support his message but this letter is making the same mistakes with unclear definitions. Fun fact the regulations set by Europe (EN15194), which we follow here in Australia, don't actually state the word "throttle" anywhere in the document, and it is quite clear on what is and isnt an "e-bike".

@DoubleCrownAddict: why make a decision before you have to? Ronan could have finished his run with an amazing time, Jackson could have got a front flat, loics legs could have felt good after the warm up then all he needed to do was roll down to claim the title. Decided not to race any earlier than he needed to would have denied any chance of him winning the title. You don't become a champion by giving away victories to your opponents. This isn't kids little league.

@DoubleCrownAddict: Loïc had the privilege of deciding what to do after all other riders had completed their runs, having qualified first and being the last man down. Fighting for the world cup overall why would you make any decision before having all the available information. Jackson then put down a heater that forced Bruni into not attempting a run because he knew he wouldnt be able to complete it due to pain, weakness, and risk of further injury. The mental side of downhill has always been just as important as the physical side, and today, Jackson won his first world cup title. What an amazing season 2025 has been.
