Last Chance: Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz's 'Out of the Ashes' 2-Bike Giveaway to Rebuild Santa Cruz Mountains Trails
Tom Morgan, president of Ibis replying. First off, the CZU Lightning Complex fire directly impacted a lot of people involved in the local mountain bike community, as well as the community as a whole. MBOSC, along with Ibis and the other sponsors wanted to do something to help the community rebuild. Second, mountain bike trail advocacy organizations like MBOSC and mountain bikers in general gain influence and credibility by supporting the maintenance and development of all trail networks, and the interests of all trail user groups, whether or not the trails are open to mountain bikes. Over time MBOSC and its volunteers have demonstrated the ability to secure funding, and to design and build new trail projects throughout the area. Consequently, they have become the go-to vendor for new trail projects for local land managers. They work cooperatively with the city, the county, Cal Fire, the Bureau of Land Management, and the state park system more effectively than those government agencies do with each other.. That status insures that whenever new trails are being developed mountain bikers have a voice at the table. If they limited themselves to only working on projects for mountain bikes they would be just another special interest group. No other user group shows up like mountain bikers do. And showing up, whether it serves our self interests or not, is a powerful force in local politics. Thanks for listening.
