Rider Sues Specialized, Claims Turbo Levo Motor ‘Defect’ Caused Him to Crash
Overrun happens when you give the cranks some power and then stop pedaling, and the motor continues to apply power to the rear wheel for a short period. It can be handy when doing technical climbs among other things, but it is meant to be comparable to the power you were applying and to be a brief help. I personally own a Turbo Levo, and roughly 2 years into owning it experienced cases where the overrun seemed quite random like the lawsuit suggests. For instance, I could put in 250w of power myself and have the bike in turbo, but the overrun is almost non-existent, and other times I'll have the motor in eco and barely move the pedal more than half a rotation and it feels like the motor pushes me forward for at least 1-2s at full power - way more than I was putting in or would expect. Both my wife and another friend who rode my bike during that time period noticed it and mentioned it, and it made my wife uncomfortable riding the bike despite having experience on another Bosch powered ebike. In my case something inside the motor eventually broke and I am in the process of replacing my entire motor because it was (of course) no longer under warranty. It sounded like a belt broke or was slipping, and would make a loud awful noise but apply no power to the actual chainring. My thought at first was that maybe the overrun issue was related to the part that was breaking, but I don't really know for sure and likely never will since I was forced to replace the entire motor. I could definitely see a scenario where the motor kicking in with way more overrun than is expected or appropriate causing an accident; for example, if I were doing a downhill and braking into a section but applied half a crank to get my pedals into the right position and the bike randomly decides to push me forward with 500w of power I wasn't ready for. What I am skeptical of is the burnout in the dirt caused from the overrun and I wonder if that was embellishment or a skid from braking. That loses him some credibility in my eyes despite actually believing this could happen and be the fault of the motor.

Burning Question: What's The Future Of E-Bike Motor Power?
@tbubier: People may not be citing it as the official reason, but it is definitely a factor in some areas. For instance, DuPont in NC appears to have this problem [1]. You could read that and think, "Well the locals just don't like them." but if you actually talk to enough locals you'll find that many of them who dislike ebikes do so at least in part because of increased traffic, and those same people probably weren't thrilled at the crazy traffic the trails saw over COVID.
