@heyj: I'm not sure about that. Here companies will pay parts of your insurance (health, family allowance, accident,..) and I think we pay more tax over here. It's just a different system, but I think it explains why Americans need to earn more. You need to cover all those things -> it's more expensive for you.
I cannot give a quantitative analysis on which system is more expensive overall.

@vinay: yes, it is. We pay many things in advance (insurance, public health care, free higher education,...) and we'll never see this money. In the U.S. you need to pay for that yourself
