@slick1: Most of the time, when riders hit their knees while pedaling out of the saddle, it's because they've leaned too far forward and are operating in a squat rather than a hinge. You might try pushing your hips back and balancing on your feet.

I agree with jddallager. How you measure is critical. I gave some detail in one of these comments. You can learn a lot more in the Dialed book. --> We can of course ride a wide variety of setups. This system has proven to work well for me, the people I work with in person, and the members of my online MTB school.
