@Jtstar: The problem isn't replacing your cables periodically, it's that the cable spends the majority of it's service life feeling not that great. Different story in the summer of course.

@wburnes: it's far more complicated than to say a material's durability is better or worse. Aluminium has a limited life due to fatigue below yield stress, bearing seats will ovalise quicker, and the HAZ softening around welds puts the weakest material in the highest load areas. Carbon hides damage, so is harder to inspect than an aluminium dent. Thin wall aluminium tubing is very hard to repair well, lasting carbon repairs can be done by any idiot. The comparisons for durability are long and need to be analysed case by case, but IMO favour carbon for mountain bike frames

@smith888: the benefits to carbon are literally everything except environmental impact, cost, and vs steel lead time. There is a reason that no one is putting the weights half way up the bike like an equivalent metal bike.
Also what's wrong with the zipties? These are race bikes not show bikes.

@stiingya: my house was built in 1890 so fear not I've kept a lot of the battered character of the house, original floorboards with all manner of dings and cuts, old wooden decoration and cornices. I've just replaced the double-overboarded sagging ceilings and rotten joists, replastered the walls and given it all some life with fresh paint. All that to say, patina is also beautiful and should be cherished. As Muscovir said, the saddest thing would be to find no joy in the tools one uses be it a bicycle, a ratchet, or a house.

@phops: is it so wrong to spend money beautifying something you love using? I've spent £30k renovating my entire house, and I couldn't be happier with it. Functionally it still shelters me from the wind and rain and has the same modcons like a kitchen and bathroom that it always had, but it's a much nicer place to be.
What's the difference between that and some shiny hubs for your bike?

@geofharries: lol yes, but also keep in mind that they are at best a modern L, to some riders probably even now a medium in length.
