PRESS RELEASE: NORTHWEST TUNE-UP FESTIVAL

The Northwest Tune-Up festival comes alive this summer, July 14-16 2023, in Bellingham’s Waterfront District, bringing together passionate bikers, a high-energy music festival, and an abundance of renowned craft beer from local PNW breweries to a world-class mountain bike destination for a second year in a row.

At the core of this festival lies a group of passionate community members dedicated to creating an event that celebrates their local mountain bike and outdoor communities. The Northwest Tune-Up festival is one of the PNW’s largest MTB focused festivals and incorporates activities that extend far beyond mountain biking, with the goal of fostering an accessible and inclusive outdoor experience for all, near and far.

Last year, festival-goers saw a glimpse of Northwest Tune-Up’s vision; this year, attendees can expect an entirely updated festival experience, from layout to lineup. The team behind the scenes spent the past year collecting extensive feedback from vendors, passholders, and community members, then, dutifully worked to improve as many aspects of the festival as possible.

Notable updates to the festival this year include a consolidated venue at the waterfront bike park and venue, music performers playing later into the night, on-site VanLife camping right on the festival grounds and flexible ticket options, including single-day, three-day and twilight passes.

Additionally, the Exhibitor Demo Village, Bellingham Makers Market, Portal Container Market, and Kulshan Trackside Brewery are open to the public and welcome non-passholders to participate in spectator-friendly activities. Passholders will have the exclusive opportunity to demo bikes, utilize free bike shuttles to Galbraith Mountain and Chuckanut trailheads, and finish each day with a full-scale music festival at the waterfront venue.

NW Tune-Up Exhibitor Village

As a bike festival first and foremost, the Exhibitor Village is an exciting space that fosters personal relationships with bike brands traveling from all over North America and beyond. Bellingham is known as a Mecca of mountain bike culture and industry, with three bike manufacturers, 14 bike shops, and dozens of bike-specific small businesses based in and around the city. The Northwest Tune-Up Exhibitor Village assembles many of the best bike businesses in one, unified space.

Organized by locals, supported by locals.

The Northwest Tune-Up was crafted from the vision of Eric Brown, known in the community for his work as Trail Director for the Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition (WMBC), and Brandon Watts, Founder and President of Freehub Magazine. Alongside them, a collection of 10 other local mountain bikers, outdoor enthusiasts, and industry veterans are working hard to create a festival experience unlike any other in mountain biking.

“The Northwest Tune-Up was created specifically to support the great outdoor organizations in Whatcom County that make it such an amazing place to live and recreate,” said Brown. “The WMBC has been building and maintaining trails for 37 years, and we’re super excited to have the non-profit back as our benefactor for both the Galbraith Mountain Enduro and the Tune-Up’s beer garden.”

2022 NW Tune-Up Festival

“I personally love our local community and The Northwest Tune-Up seemed like the perfect mix of festivities to help celebrate what makes Bellingham so great,” added Watts. “The local response has been super positive and overwhelmingly supportive, to say the least, and the folks traveling from out of town are getting a glimpse of what makes this place so darn special.”

Daily Music Lineup Schedule

The festival’s support for the cycling industry is strong, and so is the caliber of musicians that have signed on to perform in Bellingham at the 2023 event. "This year's Tune-Up line-up was supercharged by the outpouring of artist excitement coming out of last year's event. We continue to prioritize music discovery, local and regional favorites and headliners who bring energy and soulfulness to our unique festival grounds,” said the festival’s talent director, Hunter Motto.

STRFKR, Galactic featuring Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph, The Crystal Method, and The Floozies will headline the festival with dynamic performances late into the night. Local, and Northwest-based bands like Moontricks, Hot Damn Scandal, Smooth Kiwi, Snotty Nose Rez Kids, and Silk Jammies will kick off each evening, with a variety of international acts to keep festival-goers dancing well into the evening.

Northwest Tune-Up is part of Bellingham's signature event program in partnership with the City of Bellingham and Bellingham Whatcom County Tourism, aimed to encourage commerce, maximize national and regional exposure, enhance the existing quality of life for all residents, all while helping to continue building a legacy of sustainable recreation in Whatcom County.

If they want to encourage people to frequent the waterfront/pumptrack area, maybe the city should consider cleaning up the deplorable, violent homeless encampment literally right around the corner from this venue. When bikes go missing, they always end up there, and some local kids were violently threatened and chased out of the area yesterday by 10 junkies yelling death threats at them for simply walking down the block and taking a photo of a stolen bike.
  • 30 3
I didn’t want to be the one to say it but yes this is awful. I have recovered two stolen bikes so far and actively help to find others. The amount of drugs, pollution, littler ect that happens 150ft away from where children play is insane

LOCK YOU BIKES AND DONT LET THEM OUT OF YOUR SITE IF YOU COME

 @freeridejerk888: welcome to PDX

Where is all the “weed” revenue going? Downtown Bham is a dump with open drug use and encampments.
  • 16 0
I expect the waterfront to be cleaned up the moment the condo complexes are finished being built and the big real estate businesses start realizing they can sell condos for $1,500,000 if there are no homeless people around and only $750,000 if there are homeless people around
  • 15 9
@Longtravel: Not all, but the Bham locals tend to votes for things that encourage this demographic. My favorite from a fellow employee. " I pride myself on being a progressive liberal but I never thought they would show up in my neighborhood, they have to do something about it."
  • 9 1
@vonroder77: lmao, if it wasnt for the riding i would be getting the hell out of bham.
  • 15 2
should be an easy fix right? Homelessness and drug abuse famously easy for cities to solve. Rant to your local officials who vote for things that increase homelessness and continuing the drug war.
  • 6 6
@kirchenschlager: I mean leave and then you wont have any complaints Smile
  • 21 8
@vonroder77: lol liberals and conservatives literally thrive on this sort of depravity. Gives them a good reason to enact economic war against the poors and treat them like subhuman trash. People are people and making it seem like homeless people or drug abuse are unique to them is the wrong move. You are only a few degrees from being right where they are. This holier than thou B.S. is creating more barriers to helping others.
  • 12 2
@Longtravel: green drugs good, other drugs bad.

While visiting Fruita, I stopped in at Canfield Bikes. Lance Canfield said they moved from Bellingham because he was sick of having to sleep in the warehouse to keep out the scumbags.

It's been a few years since I've lived in Bham. Is Maritime Heritage Park still the stolen bike spot in town?
  • 20 6
@roxtar: I'll take the trails and bums in Bellingham over the trails and right wing nuts in Fruita any day.

 @rogue28: welcome to America

I don't think the Port has any ability to clean it up.
  • 8 9
@RogerMexico: "I'll take the meth heads in Bellingham over the farmers who were working in Fruita long before mountain bikes were a thing any day."
Fixed it for ya.
  • 2 0
@roxtar: Nah, you've left out the crucial bit about the trails in Bellingham being much better than the trails in Fruita.
  • 4 2
@kokofosho: yeah im gonna have to disagree. I've never done drugs, nor I ever plan to. These are absolute scumbag criminals and depraved individuals. They dont want to change. They enjoy their public drug use/bike theft lifestyle. They need to reopen the northern states asylum and forcefully commit a good chunk of them for forced rehab. we can't and shouldn't have to tolerate this BS ruining society b/c politicians are too corrupt to do anything about it.

@S0ckeye: no, it's south cornwall ave and a few other random spots that change weekly: behind the riteaid on NW ave, civic field area and some lettered streets spots.
  • 2 1
@Longtravel: straight into the pockets of the massively overpaid govt officials in town. The park and rec director makes well over $150k. Look at what the city pays a park stewardship supervisor:
www.governmentjobs.com/careers/cobwa/jobs/newprint/4078362

up to 104K for a job that's essentially a glorified city parks amabassador.

director of parks and rec:
www.governmentjobs.com/careers/cobwa/jobs/newprint/4078362

$155k

Maybe if we weren't paying these small town city officials 125% above average salary for their positions, we'd have money left over to actually get shit done.

$155k, and every city park is a homeless camp. There are used needles scattered around the baseball field at civic park where people's kids play little league ball...

Bellingham sucks, no need to go there.
  • 20 13
Cool idea, but they're really scraping the barrel for that band line-up.
  • 15 3
I disagree...looks like a solid lineup (especially live) for a festival that is $150 for the weekend and is about a lot more than just music
  • 4 1
Not my musical cup 'o tea, but that's more big-time hippy-jam rave stuff than you see at any other bike fest i can think of.
  • 11 5
Really? Galactic is sick. Mereba is legit up-and-coming contemporary R&B. Shana Cleveland is a great player. Snotty Nose Rez Kids are an awesome duo. Rayland Baxter is making super cool more "modern" country. And that's just what jumped out at me from an initial glance at the lineup. Are there better music festivals in the PNW? Of course.... But all of them have been going for years an focus solely on music. For only its second year, I'm actually surprised Tune Up has as good of a lineup as it does.
  • 5 6
Seriously, for $150 a ticket you’d think you might have heard of some of them
  • 2 2
Grateful Shred is an amazing band. A couple members have another band, Mapache, which I would also recommend checking out.
  • 2 1
@suspended-flesh: That's the point, this is the type of music we like in the PNW.
  • 1 0
@thatguyzack: Yeah I know. I was supporting the lineup although I prefer all the super sick black and death metal that comes out of the PNW like Hissing, Fetid, Mortiferum, Triumvir Foul even WITTR, Agalloch and the like. \m/

Having the ability to drive in last year to the demo area was great for me... Watching families walk that long road from the shuttle stop was laughable. I felt sorry for the people that shelled out the money to attend. And if you plan to go in your van/camper expect to have your body rattled at all hours of the night by trains that are 40 yards away from the lot. For the attendee's sake I hope they implement some changes.

Looks like everything you mentioned has been addressed.
