Update: It turns out that we were a bit rusty coming into the first round after a long off-season and inputted a few wrong answers to our own damn quiz. Luckily, we have the best crowd-sourced proofreaders/commenters who alerted us to our mistake (yep, we're thoroughly embarrassed). Feel free to call us all kinds of names in the comments, we definitely deserve it.

So, without further ado, the official official results... Almost 10,000 of you participated in the first round of trivia, with an impressive 4 people getting 14 out of 15 answers correct for 700 out of a possible 750 points and @Gedus73 coming away with the win in the random draw with the Round 1 Prize from Bontrager and 100% valued at $750 USD! Congratulations @Gedus73. Thanks to @welshie911 for being understanding and we've got a sweet we're-really-sorry-we-messed-up prize pack for him in the mail. See how YOU did in the official official standings by clicking here.

While the World Cup circus is on pause and the world's top riders are locked down, we've been rewatching old races and classic mountain bike DVDs and nerding out about whether the rainbow curse is real or not... and many of you are likely doing the same. To put all that World Cup DH knowledge to use, we're running DH Fantasy Trivia while we wait for DH racing to start back up.

Stay tuned for Round 2 next week! Remember, these trivia quizzes WILL count towards the overall DH Fantasy League, so if you're all all-time World Cup nerd (or just have a knack for guessing!) you could be the lucky person who gets to design a custom Project One Trek Slash carbon frame to bring home kitted out with Rockshox suspension and SRAM components!

Each trivia round will feature 15 questions and feature prizing for the overall Top Nerd. Once racing resumes (fingers crossed!), we'll continue with the regular Fantasy DH League and combine the points from Fantasy Trivia with Fantasy DH for a total of 9 rounds and crown the overall Fantasy Downhill Champion and present the Grand prize of a complete bike!

The Fantasy Downhill League is Presented by Trek.

Sadly this is the best I've ever done and I guessed on every single one

At first I thought this was waaaay too difficult to replicate the Fantasy tourney... but my average mid-pack results would suggest it may be just about right.

@pourquois-pas: That was our goal - we wanted there to be an element of research but also an element of chance - just like in World Cup DH!

@sarahmoore: Is this something we can keep doing? Even after all this kerfuffle has passed. A monthly 'Pinkbike Pub Quiz' format of questions, images and clips but with a countdown to complete them all once started.
  • 3 0
@Dropthedebt: You might be on to something here... Could be a fun off-season game to complement the Fantasy League during the regular race season.

 01. What's the middle name of the DH racer with the most Round 1 wins?

Anne-Caroline Chausson has seven first round wins: Cap d'Ail 94, Panticosa 96, Stellenbosch 98, Les Gets 99, Les Gets 2000, Maribor 2001, and Fort William 2004.

02. There's only been one opening round DH race where just a single rider with a Top 10 number plate finished in the Top 10. Who was that rider?

Not so true, it has happened twice in an opening round: 1994 & 2017.

In 1994 (Cap d'Ail) the top ten were: 20, 26, 100, 3 (Stefano Migliorini), 341, 52, 107, 46, 315, and 16.
In 2017 (Lourdes) the top ten were: 37, 22, 20, 12, 5 (Connor Fearon), 31, 68, 46, 29, and 11.

04. How many opening round World Cup DH races have Trek athletes won?

Five: Pietermaritzburg 2009 & 2011 (Tracy Moseley), Pietermaritzburg 2011 (Aaron Gwin), and Lourdes 2016 & 2017 (Rachel Atherton).

05. What color were the forks of Tomas Misser's 1994 prototype Klein bike at the Cap d'Ail opening round?

I knew for certain that: Tomi finished 10th, his plate number was 16, and his bike had Volvo/Klein stickers. Nico Vouilloz had a red RockShox fork (probably a not-yet released Judy DH), and other athletes either had a red RockShox or a RockShox Mag 21 (gold). Tomi Misser used both in 1994.

06. The opening round was supposed to be in Lousã, Portugal this year. What's the best ever World Cup finish by a Portuguese rider?

18th place for Áurea Sofia Cintra Agostinho (Vigo 2007), and 18th place for Francisco Pardal (Vallnord 2013). Áurea started her specialization in clinical orthodontics in 2015/2016.

07. How many times has the winner of the opening round gone on to win the overall?

18 times for Elite and more than 23 times if the Juniors category is included. Anne-Caroline Chausson (1998, 1999, 2000 & 2001), Aaron Gwin (2011, 2015, 2016), Nicolas Vouilloz (1995 & 1998.), Sabrina Jonnier (2005 & 2007), Tracy Moseley (2006 & 2011), Rachel Atherton (2013 & 2016), François Gachet (1994), Manon Carpenter (2014), and Loïc Bruni (2019).

08. Who was the first Trek athlete to podium at a World Cup DH?

Scott Sharples (Trek/Volkswagen) finished 5th at Stellenbosch 97, and then 2nd at Big Bear Lake in 98.

10. After winning qualifying, at the opening round of the WC in 2006, what time did Mick Hannah predict he would do in finals?

High 2:22 (he did 2:22.94 on his race run).

11. Which year did opening round podium rider Sam Hill go on to smash the Dirt Magazine test track, the 1:04?

Sam's New Record: 57.81s

12. Which two riders, 9 years apart, have crashed at the same corner of the opening rounds of the World Cup?

Peaty gave up the answer. Sam's 2010 crash

13. According to Alex Rankin, how many slaps to the face can Cédric Gracia take?

youtu.be/G5DhR1G6BJI?t=1050

14. What song was playing when Aaron Gwin won in Lošinj in 2018?

youtu.be/EPhWR4d3FJQ

15. Which manufacturer's hat did the winner of the opening round in 2010 wear on the podium?

youtu.be/hezpO9v3grI?t=363

Rachel and Greg were wearing hats on the podium (Greg took it off only for the anthem). But it can be argued that Red Bull is only a sponsor, and Gamut is a manufacturer/sponsor.

Thanks for posting the explanations of the answers.

I thought that prior to 1997 the world cup DH didn't have an "opening round", and was just a single event, not a series. This might be incorrect? I guess you could argue what opening round means, but for question 7 I only counted 15 for opening round gone on to win overall, and that also cleans up question 2.

I'm really enjoying this trivia, honestly more than the normal pool. I know pinkbike is trying to do right, just a little fumble when they didn't realize how many correct answers a question could have. Looking forward to round 2.

Just curious, how did you find the results for the 1994 Cap d'Ail and Tomi's bike for question 5? If you don't mind telling me.
  • 2 0
@suburbansasquatch: What did you search? I'm trying different key words and still can't find the image to save my life.
  • 1 0
@whosmorgan: To be honest I'm not sure. I bookmarked the website. I believe the original search was simply "1994 cap d’ail dh" which lead me to MalcomFearon's website. From there I found his archive of old bike photos and he had the prototype bike which was luckily well labeled.

@Johanvdb has made a great point (although he was down voted for reasons I'm not too sure about) about Anne- Caroline Chausson's middle name. From the sources below, it does seem her middle name is Stéphanie (an answer choice provided).

2) www.france-phaleristique.com/lh_promo_14-11-08.htm

 Poor welshie911 lol
  • 8 0
I knowwww... That was the worst part about having to rerun the scores! He does have a sweet consolation/sorry-we-messed-up prize pack coming his way at least.
  • 2 0
@sarahmoore: a Portuguese junior was 10th at Lourdes in 2017.
  • 3 0
This was kind of fun, from a nerdy WC racing point of view haha! Guessed maybe 1/3 of these, knew the others or did the research. Keep it coming Pinkbike!

Would it be possible to get the exact answers for some of these questions, like the first one for example? Or the Trek Athletes who won opening rounds.
  • 6 0
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it, definitely super nerdy! We're planning on making the answer key much more detailed for the next round, but here's the answer to the Trek question:

(1) Tracy Moseley: Peitermaritzburg 2009
(2) Tracy Moseley: Peitermaritzburg 2011
(3) Aaron Gwin: Peitermaritzburg 2011
(4) Rachel Atherton: Lourdes 2016
(5) Rachel Atherton: Lourdes 2017
  • 2 0
@sarahmoore: Awesome, thanks for the follow up and looking forward to the next one!

Question 6 : The best finish for a Portuguese rider was 5th if you were counting Juniors too (Tiago Ladeira - La Bresse 2018 * ) - I went with 4th as it was the closest result on the list to 5th. Excellent quiz, but I think less room for interpretation next round would be better to prevent dumb-asses like me overthinking it!

@sarahmoore: wasn't Rachel Atherton wearing a redbull hat on the podium in 2010
  • 2 0
Yes, but considering that the question is "which manufacturer", the right answer remains Gamut with Greg Minaar. Kind of a trick question, had me hesitating.
  • 2 0
@alexridesbikes-13: I went with Gamut, because I kind of foresaw this happening. But the argument that red-bull doesn't manufacture a beverage is pretty tenuous. The intent of the question seemed to be "What brand/sponsor hat"

I'm sure round 2 will be ironed out.
  • 1 0
@FlightlessLobster: Yeah. Bet I'll do much better next round.
  • 2 0
@FlightlessLobster: Totally valid point, with which I kind of agree. I went with the purely bike related manufacturers, which had me choosing Gamut in the end.
  • 1 1
There's only been one opening round DH race where just a single rider with a Top 10 number plate finished in the Top 10. Who was that rider? Answer - Connor Fearon

What race? Lourdes 2017? The women's race had 8 of the top 10?
  • 3 0
Hey @banj, yes that one is Lourdes 2017, we would count the men's race and the women's race as separate races
  • 3 0
Dammit I missed two more with the corrections!
  • 2 0
Same. I went from 450 points in 70th place to 350 points in 223rd place. When is next week's quiz?
  • 3 0
 @benbenbeast: Mid-week next week we'll kick off round 2!
  • 1 0
@sarahmoore: Alright thanks. These are really fun, especially in quarantine.
  • 2 0
@sarahmoore: I suck at this game more so then the actual fantasy picks...
  • 2 0
142nd haha... nailed it. Actually pleasantly surprised haha, I'll take that.
  • 3 0
 That's a solid result - nice work!
  • 1 1
 Actually dude I’m 142nd. Wooo
  • 2 0
 3286...was it the last place?
  • 3 0
Far from it, almost 10,000 people played!
  • 3 0
I'm also in 3286th place as is my brother, Graywing34
  • 2 0
Yep, somehow I am also in 3286th place. Perhaps they didn't bother putting anyone below that
  • 2 0
pfff I'm 8431 with a grand total of 0 points
  • 3 0
@x57bob: Since all questions are worth 50 points there are a lot of ties. Looks like you got three questions right for 150 points so you aren't last!
  • 2 0
@Supergirl56: please see me after class to discuss irregularities arising from your recent quiz paper.
  • 1 0
 @sarahmoore:

Ah sorry didn’t even think about that! Didn’t realize that people could get the same score out of only 15 questions lol
  • 2 0
Any more updates on Round 2, or is it over?
  • 2 0
Bumping, because I wanna know too.
  • 1 0
link to overall standings doesn't work?
  • 1 0
You mean researching is allowed?! Dam
  • 1 2
My real job is better time spent than chasing this contest. Pays better too.
  • 7 10
 Who won more opening races than Anne-Caroline (Stéphanie) Chausson ? (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004).
  • 5 0
I also want to know the answer to this question, I also thought it was Anne-Caro.
  • 4 0
@alexridesbikes-13: yeah, would be nice to know who it actually was Smile
  • 4 0
@Johanvdb: Was also confused on that. From my research Anne-Caroline Chausson had won the most opening rounds. Her middle name was hard to find and the only source I found was www.olympedia.org/athletes/113111. Not sure how accurate it is though.
  • 4 0
@suburbansasquatch: That's the same source I found for that too, and the fact that it is one of the answers makes it all that more confusing haha.
