Knolly Bikes Launches Fugitive 29er
@Flowcheckers: not necessarily specific to this application, but bushings generally cost significantly less. They're way simpler to manufacture and to lubricate, though bearings need less lubrication maintenance. Bushings have more initial static friction but I'm not sure you'd notice it in this application.

Salsa Cycles at Frostbike 2018
There's definitely a group matching your vision, but it also seems that people who want a simple steel bike split themselves between the Salsa/Surly camp and the Chromag/Ragley/Cotic type of brands. The guy on the SS pugsley loaded to the nuts is definitely a hard-core tourer, a grey-beard or both!

Red Bull Valparaíso Urban DH 2018: Tomáš Slavik's Winning Run - Video
@packfill: that gives you a better perspective. Plus, I noticed @ 1:21 in his run, the drone footage shows him crossing the road, while about 100m in front of him a giant bus is chugging up the hill headed right towards him. I guess they don't have things like course closures for these urban races? crazy!

Carbon vs Aluminum: Separating Environmental Fact From Fiction in the Frame Materials Debate

Carbon vs Aluminum: Separating Environmental Fact From Fiction in the Frame Materials Debate
@WAKIdesigns: I agree with you and propped your comment - all of your justifications are why I ride my bike when I'm in "commuter-mode" - BUT we (as in, the royal We) need to let go of a "must sacrifice and suffer" attitude when it comes to everyday actions that impact the environment. How successful are most when it comes to forcing themselves to do something because they know it's good for them? (i.e. how many of you are still following your new year's resolution?) So yes, it's BS to say "I ride my bike instead of driving" if you still own a shuttle vehicle or drive 50km to the trailhead, but it's completely legit in my books to say "I biked to work everyday last year because it's cheaper/good for me/better for the earth" even if the (you know it's true) real reason is because you;re like me and enjoy riding your bike way more than driving.

Probably because it's still iffy if you'll be able to get a set of them under the $300 limit for inclusion in this feature...

The Brett Rheeder Story: Fighting Back and Looking Forward – Video
Nyquist is this weird combination of super-experienced competitor and a dude riding a mountain bike for the first time... It's pretty funny to watch someone consistently pull 720's then have adjusting the compression knob on a fork blow their mind. no judgement - that's the sort of thing that likely keeps him young and competitive.
