Nerding Out: You're Measuring Sag Wrong, But That's OK
When familiar with your bike, this is the way. Sit on it, and see if it feels about right. Bounce up and down on the seat a little. Is it about the same as you're used to? Start there. Bottoming out? Add spacers or compression. Landing nose down? Add rebound. Nose high? Back off the rebound.
But if it's a new bike, gotta start with an "attack position" sag.
