Brian’s Randoms: Hidden Gems and Wild Finds from the China Cycle Show 2026
@Salinity: Absolutely. In the past few decades, China was mainly a massive outsourcing factory. People are used to getting orders, having them delivered, and getting paid, instead of 'creating' new stuff. Because in the era of transformation from a poor and weak country to a modernized and developed one, people need financial income to feed themselves first, and that's the basic rule in nature - survive first, then you can live a better life. But Chinese people have never lacked creativity in the past thousands of years‘ history. Now experience accumulated, money earned, talents hired or cultivated, Chinese brands are ready to show off their power and strength in the coming years. But it's still a long road for them to transform from outsourcing to creating. Once that is done, the global industry will surely be changed.

@justanotherusername: Yeah. By interior I meant the look of it. You can checkout a BYD 'Song' or 'Yuan', the design is unbearablly hideous comparing to other Chinese brands such as Li Auto or NIO. However the specification and materials in Chinese EVs are pretty satisfying. I recently purchased a Li Auto i6, the AI powered L2 assisted driving is amazing, while other specs such as double-chamber adjustable air suspension, seat heating, ventilation and massaging are all standard spec. However, my previous A4 Allroad didn't have either of that, but the price was doubled. But I have to admit that I still love the Allroad, it provided me with pure driving experience and the slim and sporty look really got me. A little off the topic here, but the general idea is that the way ahead of Chinese brands is still rather long and rewind, but the trend is inevitable.

Well said. Exactly what I have in mind. A transformation period from just 'making' to 'producing' and it will last for a relatively long time.

@bikedrd: No probs. PB has limited it to be viewed only in Greater China region. The MTB scene has been growing in the recent years and more and more top international riders such as Bulldog, Blenki, Mick & Tracy Hannah, Sam Renolds, Nathan Rennie have already experienced events in China.

@justanotherusername: Exactly. The supply chain is unbelievable here in China, especially in the Yangtze River Delta area and the Greater Bay area, where manufacturers are gathered. If you got starting money, you can easily have your own brand's bikes assembled in a very short time, with tens or even hundreds types/categories of frames or components to choose from. These suppliers mostly have above average quality, but when it comes to design or originality, you'll have to pay much more, or bring in your own ones to them.
Speaking of EVs, BYD is doing fairly well in Europe, as they have done in domestic market. But still many people (including me myself) don't like some design on their cars (mostly interior). I even doubt that the designers or their department leaders have some kind of libido for ugliness. That's what Chinese brand need to work on - better designs, more original ideas, etc.

@theoskar57: Exactly. Automobile industry started early, they hire famous engineers, designers or agencies to do the tuning, designing, etc. But there are still examples of copying international major brands or models till today, which many people hate to see. Some people do think it's a flaterry if their design or product were copied, or 'contributed', but after so many years of internationalization, we (especially those 'insiders'') still need more respect in mind to the copyright and creatively.
