Photo Epic: The Eleventh Hour - Red Bull Rampage 2021

The final day before Rampage is often a frantic one, with builds being finished around the mountain in between practice sessions. Today however, only Brage Vestavik and Reed Boggs seemed to be doing any building, neither of whom competed in Red Bull Rampage in 2016 or 2017 and both of whom had unique lines that didn't overlap with other riders. Everyone else had already put the finishing touches on their lines and had time to get out and ride in a morning session as winds were light for the first part of the day.

The morning started off with some incredible riding. Jaxson Riddle jumped "The Giraffe" on his line, the only section he hadn't hit thus far, while Kyle Strait hit his massive chute, and Brage Vestavik got to put down the tools momentarily to ride the top part of his line above his giant drop. It all seemed too good to be true however, and as the riders worked up to progressively bigger features and tricks, we saw heavy crashes from Carson Storch and Cam Zink. While Zink says he will be able to drop in tomorrow despite a bruised lung, Storch will be missing out on finals after breaking his collarbone.

The afternoon was a quiet one, with most builds done and the winds too strong for riding. As the winds quieted down close to dusk however, the bikes came back out for a last chance session before finals tomorrow. Brage Vestavik went up to attempt his massive drop late in the day, and unfortunately came up just short on the landing. We now have confirmation from Red Bull that Vestavik has had to withdraw from the event due to injuries and we are gutted that we won't get to see him ride the full line that was inspired by the natural lines of the early 2000s in finals. There will be 12 riders dropping tomorrow with Andreu Lacondeguy, Carson Storch, and Brage Vestavik now injured.

Tune in to watch finals tomorrow at redbull.com

Unfortunately Brage the Norwegian didn t land this spectacular drop. He suffered an injury that will mean that he is unable to compete in the finals - this breaks all of our hearts and we hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Brage & Andreu were the two guys I was most forward to seeing this year. Gutted they're both injured and wish them both a quick recovery.

Same! They're both representative of what Rampage should be, more natural lines and gnarly stuff rather than slopestyle lines for big bikes (I'm exagerating a bit but you get the picture)

@SendyMcGnar: 100%. Honestly Rampage doesn't excite me as much as it used too.
  • 1 3
@SendyMcGnar: This is not a knock on Andreu at all, but you think his lines are more natural? His team does just as much building as everyone else out there. His lines have all the same huge man made jumps, & lips while his line is buffed just as smooth as anyone else. He also does as many tricks as anyone else out in the field. He's throwing multiple flips and spins every run.

Again I love what the guy is doing, but your perception that he's doing something more traditional or "natural" than everyone else really doesn't seam to fit reality.

Assuming they all make a “full enough” recovery, I wonder if there’s any chance they’d be able to come back (b4 nxt years RR) and try sending the lines they spent 2-3 days building ,Obviously they all live a pretty good distance from the area, but provided they could afford to make it there somehow ,does anyone know if the general public can access the site between events or does BLM make it off limits? Although winning the event would have been epic id be willing to bet if given the opportunity, they would all come back for some Rampage Redemption!
Myself included ,It seems like the riders who were injured ,were the exact riders a lot off people were looking forward to watching? It could be organized as a separate event of sorts?
Rampage Redemption
PB could hold a raffle or contest for my new Heckler E bi k. oops he he
I mean
A new bike or something Rolleyes
(a Heckler cc size lrg in blk murdered out w/Burgtech/Ohlins/XTR
or whatever ,
And the proceeds go towards getting the riders back on site

With all the crashes listed today are there alternates ready to tackle the challenge or too late into the game?
  • 5 1
I would love to see Brandt drop in!

they wait in the bush next to the finish line, Redbull guys just have to whistle and they will come out.
  • 8 1
Sounds like a recipe for disaster with so little practice

@medievalbiking: Your names drawn from a hat and the only rule is you have to ride the line of the guy you replaced.
  • 4 0
@medievalbiking: the back ups are out there, hsve been as long as the main pics. some on dig crews. So I'd think they're ready.
  • 5 0
@nojzilla: There are no fill in alternates one digging starts. Its always been a rampage "rule" It caught me out in 2017 as first alternate. No one either!
  • 1 0
@medievalbiking: Not really. There's a "basic" ridge line down the mountain. They won't have winning runs but a lot of top riders could send it top to bottom with some scoping and little practice. So gutted to hear about Brage and Storch. Frown

@mitch1616: the alternate line you built near old site turned out epic though. Been chasing that thing trying to figure it all out, it's frickin gnar!

the Sorge/TVS drop is so scary, so if you bump the knuckle then you fall into a chasm. I can't remember seeing a precision landing like that before

MvDP is good with drops. Maybe he could get a wildcard entrance.

Give the bike and Brage line to Josh Bender .. And the show goes on!

Love Rampage... but the injuries. Redbull's physio.... my dream job.

Heal up Boggs, Brage, and Lacondeguy - you will be sorely missed!

Edit, Heal up Storch. Ride well Boggs!
