Can anyone tell me why they don't run 8spd setups with the fatter chains? I know they're heavier and 'outdated' but really?

@jaame: I follow your train of thinking but there is something else which really ought to be taken into account, in my view. We are in a period of change, where we are getting to grips with how to be truly fair and balanced in the area of gender, among other things. However it wasn't always this way, there remains a structural imbalance in our culture which will take some time to reset and - for example - as a white male I recognise the implicit privilege I have enjoyed. If we were starting clean, with a new sport, just invented, I don't think we would be arguing about categories and prize money - people tend to have an inherent sense of fair play and would probably try to split things equally. We're not and I believe, not just for fairness but also to make our sport better, we should make some effort to redress the balance and this means making more effort to encourage women - make it appealing and break down the barriers which have been in place for so long. That's how I see it anyway.
