I wonder if it has more to do with buildup than abrasion. Imagine a pebble gets stuck to the side of the rotor, the pads just scrape it off before it enters the caliper. But if you got a pebble that's exactly the width the brake pads are apart into the top of the caliper where the pad mount pin is, it could potentially hold the pads apart. The right constancy mud could possibly do the same thing if it got well enough packed.
