The Short, Turbulent Life of URT Suspension
Great analogy. I moved from bmx to mountain biking in the mid 1990s. First real full sus bike was the Trek Y-glide. The one that was speced with the dc Judy LTs up front. Bought it brand new for around $1100 when I was 19. My parents thought I lost my mind. I immediately fell in love with the gravity side of riding. I am surprised I survived that bike. Everything you say here is spot on from my experience with the URT. Including the comparison to the crazy chicks.

Bike Standards—How Did We Get Here?—A Podcast
The industry doesn't want you to maintain and ride your current bike for 5-8 years. With proper maintenance, a bike can last a long time. That cuts into revenue. So the "solution" is to make your parts outdated as quickly as possible and convince you that the geometry of your bike from 3 years ago is suddenly all wrong. I love new shiny bike stuff, but the industry is messing with us.

2017 Pinkbike Awards - Mountain Bike of the Year Nominees
Granted they may make awesome bikes, but do they change it up enough each year for a fresh review on it so that it should be a consideration? Or is it just that awesome that it doesnt need to change and it sets the standard for others to follow year in and year out? I guess I don't follow Trek enough to have an opinion on performance.
