Mathieu Van Der Poel Taking Mountain Bike Sabbatical Until 2023
@colincolin: For most of us I would agree. For a dude like him who can make $3m+ a year for a few years...different story. That sets you up for life. I doubt he is training/doing more for road. He's just making way more money doing it.

$$$, can't blame him. Most/all of us would likely make the same decision. You only have so many years on top, make the most of them. And regardless of our personal wishes, road makes astronomically more money than mountain bike.

Interesting, there are a lot of bike companies that are getting bikes out the door in a reasonable timeframe now. Not sure why/how they can't do it.

Update: Tom Pidcock to Make MTB Return at Albstadt World Cup
At this point, guys like MVDP and Pidcock are so strong that they can be successful at most/all disciplines. That gives them negotiating power so my guess is they are riding what they want, when they want to. Most guys dont have that kind of influence but their star power and proclivity at winning likely allows them to dictate that to teams. And the teams are more than happy to oblige because of the visibility it brings in addition to wins/podiums. Seems to me like they don't know or care what their 'main discipline' is but rather just enjoying racing what they want.

@andraperrella27: Oh, 100% haha....but same logic applies as to why its so popular. Boulder just gets runners, hikers and road riders. Squamish gets mtb, climbers and paddlers.

Its an outdoor mecca that also happens to be an hour from a major metropolitan center and major international airport. Same reason why Boulder is a shite show for the housing market. Access to everything.
