First Look: The Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay 3 Gets More Power and a New Suspension Layout
@Heywood165: My bad, I completely skipped that part of your question... It's fully backwards compatible with the previous gen Altitude Powerplay. You'll need the new Spider Ratchet assembly and new lock nut (specific 24 and 30mm spindle options).

First Look: The Rocky Mountain Altitude Powerplay 3 Gets More Power and a New Suspension Layout
The new ratchet clutch is built similarly to a freehub, it uses pawls and springs instead of the sprag clutch. It's a lot more reliable, fully rebuildable and about half the weight. They've been using a similar system on the Instinct PP SL since it launched, this one is just new on the Altitude PP as they don't have the same BB spacing/chainline.

Review: 2026 Devinci Spartan - A Canadian-Made Aluminum Beast
Although I agree with you that in-frame storage is great, the trade off is a lot of extra weight from thicker tubing to make sure the downtube is strong/stiff enough with the gaping hole in it. Devinci prioritized in-frame storage in this case (only offering it in alloy likely played in that choice), whereas Trek likely choose weight/cost.
