You need to practice a little on your curving technique, I can't tell you much without being there and show you but one thing that I think would make big difference is that you should learn to hold your knees out. I knew this before but it wasn't until this summer I really started doing it and felt the huge advantage from it and especially when you come to more technically demanding parts of a trail. You'r friend seems to have more of that riding style and he also looked to be a bit faster too.
I hope that helps a bit.

Oh, and what that does is that you get better balance when you got more movable mass to use when turning or to parry when getting hit of the track by rocks and roots.
I also got into a more leaned back position that made me able to use the legs as shocks more then before that also made me much faster over bumpy parts. People talk about keeping pressure on the front tire but sometimes you can take turns with the front wheel almost in the air or at least when exiting tight corners. I don't know any exact rules about this but it could be something to think of and try different styles and see what works for you.
I converted my voltage to 200mm in the rear with a little custom building just because of my new riding style and I've made a huge improvement in my riding this summer even if I've got very little riding.
