this Is probably a dumb question, but I know nothing about trials, I am trying to learn how to ride trials, why is everything done on the back tire? whenever you are going to jump on to something you start on the back tire,

Tough question to answer really. I guess its just how the technique has evolved. its easier to go bigger when going off a single wheel on things like side hops etc. static moves are quite a bit easier off the back wheel, but the rolling moves are generally from both wheels.
i guess to relate it to MTBing is to try bunnyhopping both wheels at the same time, then do the hop lifting the front wheel first followed by the back wheel...should be easier to get higher or more distance with the latter.
hope it helps, but not sure it'll be the answer you want
