you should have one on because it gives you more control and comfort, plus your brakes should be hydraulic and you it shouldn't take more than one finger to press them

i tried it with one finger yesterday and it felt really uncomfortable, is it just my crappy brakes?

Probably, its 10x better for most people, just set your brakes up for a more comfortable position
