True, but I think for him it was a marketing choice. He wasn't the standard trials rider that does races and world championships. He was the type of rider that does freestyle and does tricks in the streets.
By having a bigger frame, that looks like a small XC frame instead of a trials frame, and a suspension fork instead of a trials specific fork, he broke his connection / image with trials, and matched it to mountainbiking.
Why? Because there's no money in freestyle for trials. But mountainbikers love freestyle, and it was a big upcoming thing at that moment.
By switching to a bike that looks like a mountainbike he was able to rock the mountainbike industry. With a trials bike he would not have done any of the DVD's, probably wouldn't have had most of his sponsors, and would have not been able to make a living from freestyle. The trials sponsors only care about racing.
For him it was either join the mtb industry and make money with doing what he loves, or having a trials bike and having to compete, which is not his thing at all.

Really wondering why he's riding that spaghetti suspension fork for trials? IMO it has only downsides on a trials bike.
