How to Get Your Girlfriend Hooked on Mountain Biking

As a female rider, guys I meet on the trail will often say "I wish I could get my girlfriend into mountain biking." So I made this video with some tips to help you fellas get your girlfriends hooked on mountain biking. I realize there's no magic formula but I hope these tips will help us all get more lady-gals out riding.

This is awesome! Thanks so much for the video.
I’ve been trying to persuade and coax my gf/now wife into riding for years.
You’ve given me new hope. Haha
I’m going to have her look up DustyBetty when she gets home from work.
Thank you!!!!

Thanks! I know everyone is different but I really hope she'll connect with something in my story. I've got lots of cool content coming on on my YT channel including coverage of outerbike, and riding the Whole Enchilada in Moab.

 @dustybetty:
We watched it together last night. She thought it was cool that women are getting into the sport, so that’s a start. It’s gelped that my 2 year old loves his strider bike too. She said she wishes she could ride with other women in Phoenix area. If you or any other DustyBettys are ever in the area that’d be awesome! I’ll be on your website frequently to check for updates and news. Thanks for what you’re doing. I can probably speak for all the mtb men, it’s refreshing to see more ladies entering the sport.
Thanks!

@jdsusmc: I'll be in Tucson and Phoenix areas this winter. I'd love to connect and go riding. I don't know if you or your wife are on instagram but that's where I post my most up to date stuff about where I am www.instagram.com/dustybettymtb Hope to meet you both this winter.

I think that this video has great tips for getting more women out on bikes. I also think that there are differences between "some" male and female beginner riders. Most of the guys I have ridden with (including the one that taught me) grew up riding their BMX bikes and making jumps in their front yards. The learning curve was a lot shorter for them than compared to the women I ride with.

Sigh... you can substitute the word "woman/girl" for "any beginner that is interested in mountain biking" - None of this content is gender specific, weight, breaks, comfort on the difficulty of trails etc.. is all relative to a new rider, not just a girl.

How sexist a woman speaking from personal experience.

I absolutely agree that these are good tips for getting anyone into mountain biking. Women's topics are a big focus of my channel so a lot of my videos are geared that way. Apologies if some folks find that sigh inducing or heaven forbid "triggering."

@dustybetty: Nothing triggers a white man faster than content intended for a demographic that doesn't include him explicitly

Nice b-reel Bend footage! Can you add Washington State to your tour asap! My wife has caught the mt bike bug...when I get home from work she's out back riding my dirt jumper with the kids trying to learn to roll over the pump track rollies. I think a DustyBetty clinic would be something she'd really enjoy!

Yessss! Your wife sounds awesome. It's taking me a little longer than I had hoped to get my ducks in a row for offering clinics but at the very least, I'd love to meet up with you guys to ride next summer.

We have lots of womens groups in WA ???? Crank Sisters (part of evergreen) puts on a bunch of beginner and intermediate rides. Bell Joy Ride is awesome and also all-women. We have all-women Enduro races (Sturdy Dirty) and weekend clinics (Sugar Showdown). Let me know if your lady wants more information!

Sorry those ???? was a smiley face on my phone but didn't go through. Didn't mean for that to look rude!!

This is so true!! Patience is key and very essential. You guys don't even have to sacrifice your whole day to teach us. I found it's a good compromise if the bf shows you some things, like how to chose lines in technical parts of the trail, and when you need a break he can go shred a bit by himself.

Great tips to get women into biking - I'm a Trek Women's advocate and my goal is to overall get more women on bikes! A tip I have is go out and do a ride - get your workout in - then meet up with beginners or a friend you want to teach how to ride. Helps me from pressuring the newbie into more miles or a faster pace or more technical trails!

This was really thoughtfully done- nice work and thank you for putting it together. Nearly everything in this video were problems I also encountered when trying mountain biking. Wrong size bike, wrong trails, wrong set-up, wrong everything. It made me never want to go again. If I hadn't started riding with women, I would have quit and never looked back. Yes, this is a generalization (logistically, it has it be) but I absolutely agree with all of it. Had these things gone right for me, I wouldn't have spent so much time wondering if I was actually cut out for mountain biking.

Wow. I feel I am likely not alone in finding this more than just a little derogatory. How to get into mountain biking? Borrow a bike and get directions to a beginner trail. Grab a friend who is patient and knows the trails every once in a while as their patience allows.Pretty sure that's how everyone I knew got into it, not by a bf who pandered to a seemingly incapable gender into doing something to make their bf happy. It's not washing the sheets. It biking. It's awesome - grab a bike and get hooked.

I realize that my experiences and perspective don't represent represent all women, but I suspect yours don't either. I love the simplicity of your mantra "grab a bike and get hooked." That's all some people need. But I'm not so steeped in political correctness that I'm willing to ignore many women out there who have benefited from a different introduction to mountain biking than the one you suggest. I'm glad you shared your perspective. The people who don't connect with me may connect with you, but if it all helps folks discover a love of mountain biking, I'm for it.

This reminds me that most guys are absolute cave men & my wife married my pain in the ass of a personality because even I an smart enough to get most of these tips on my own.

Great, precise tips. Teach all these goons ma'am. They need all the help they can get.

You guys should do one about how to get my boyfriend into road cycling! I'm sure it will be a few years before he can keep up with my pace but I just really want to support his interest in my interests.

I love the look in her eyes when she hears me talk about air pressure and matinance she can do on her bike. It's like getting ghosted by a ghost
