RED BULL

HERE COMES THE SUN

RAMPAGE

The Red Bull Rampage Qualifiers continued today with a tacky mountain and only a few puddles to side-step and vehicles to dig out. The sound of shovels reshaping and packing lines echoed through the canyon early, but everything had remained surprisingly intact and survived the 24 hours of rain. By the time qualifiers started the sun was shining and everyone was breathing a little calmer to know that the show would go on. Aggy essentially ended the day with a bang, after crashing in his first run on Friday, he stomped his second run and landed a first place qualifying spot for finals. Seeing only a fraction of what's in store for tomorrow, we can't wait for the sun to come up!

Cooking great pics. How did Abby get Craig David to help out? What a boss! Rheeder's drop was insane, then I look at the next shot and he's upside down off it. Totally nuts the lot of them!
  • 3 1
not related but putting it up here so it gets seen. does anyone else find it unfair that there's qualifiers in the sense that aggy has already revealed his full run and had it judged, pre qualified riders have the element of surprise on their runs because that's the first time anyone will have seen the whole line. riders like aggy have to drop in and ride the same line in the finals that the judges have already seen and surely the fact he has already been judged on that run is a disadvantage as it then loses that surprise element and also some of the gnar as it has already shown to be fully ridable!? i'm not saying aggy's line isn't absolutely ridiculous i just find it unfair he's already had to show his hand before some of the other riders
  • 2 0
Sooo friggen epic. That side shot of Aggy's drop finally gives perspective to how monsterous it is and Zink's... holy shit. I'm not sure which is bigger but either way, those look to be the biggest drops ever built, haha. Also that top drop Aggy crashed on the first run, I had no idea how exposed it was off the rider's left-hand side. Really gnarly.

Brand-new- Element of surprise or how rideable a line seems aren't criteria for the judges... there's absolutely no disadvantage to showing your line before the comp, as evidenced by every rider practicing and making sure they have their whole line down before the comp. Wink

Dear PB - Any chance of a 'Behind The Lens' feature on Rampage photographers at some point? I'd love to understand more about the logistics and creativity available shooting at the event!
  • 3 0
That would be tight. Seeing the guys walking around with the heavy-ass equipment along ridgelines and goat paths is almost as entertaining as the riders, haha.

The photographers looked like some hybrid astronauts, super fancy stuff, they were quite a part of the clown show that is rampage. I wanted photo's of them, but none of them were inclined. Kinda camera shy, perhaps that's why they are "behind" the lens.

Thank you photo people, you were a source of entertainment at the "event". Good times

I mean, incredible pictures, but talk about a huge case of underrepresentation. Not one photo of Wil White's second run? Not even one of him hangin' with the fam? I love Aggy, Andreu, Zink, etc. as much as the next guy, but I'd rather see White et al crushing natural lines than see sunset photos of the three hundredth shot of Aggy's beard. Long live all the riders, but let's see at least a bit of the guys we don't get to see as much! Rampage4lyfe.
  • 5 1
Clearly if your line is taken before you got there, you can hardly claim it as 'your' line
  • 2 0
It says he didn't get the line he really wanted. He never claimed anything as his. Pretty big difference. James is a good guy, he wasn't accusing someone of stealing his line.

Godziek evidently took the risk and sent the canyon gap straight yesterday. Seems he didn't want to play it safe as in the firtst run, as "it's easier to flip it".
  • 1 0
It' bizarre that some slopestylers(with very limited bigmountain skills) are prequalified and some big mouantain big names had to earn their spot on qualies or simply they are out, is like the best men for the show won't be there .
The line assigment system most be improve or the same people always will get the best line
  • 2 2
Only thing that bugs me...its RZR..not razor..razr...it's literally on the side of the jump.../spelling nazi.

Sucks for James Doerfling riding for Knolly. Thats a bit of a disappointment. Regardless, awesome event, good coverage, and epic pics!

im more impressed with Zink's drop than Aggy/Lacon's one cos its more mega steep. Just looks more gnarly.
